The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

What Is This Room?
I always find these strange rooms. They are all grey, usually with skulls in the walls and they always have one set of spikes in the middle of the floor. There is nothing else in them. What are these rooms used for?

I believe these are called "Self Sacrifice Rooms."
Hurting yourself on the spike gives you a chance to get a consumeable (Keys, Bombs, iron chests, etc.)

By and large, sacrifice rooms are useless. I've really only used them in the early game to knock Eve down to (W)♥♥♥♥ of Babylon state, or to have Lazarus commit suicide. They're getting a buff in Afterbirth, though.

They were originally put into the game for the reasons above, as well as the fact that the unlockable Lost character was to be unlocked by following steps you recieved after you repeatedly killed yourself to one of these "self sacrifice" rooms. Unfortunately, before anyone got to the point of finishing the puzzle that contained the steps, the game was data-mined, so everything there was to know about the game. Edmund (dev) has expressed in the past his dissapointment that this ended up being the case, but he also mentioned in recent Afterbirth blogs that the concept of the room type was to be overhauled.

It's a sacrifice room. They're basically completely useless.

What Edmund fails to mention is that The puzzle was literally less than 3 hours to being finished. He sees everyone as a bad guy.

Ed said they would be better in Rebirth before it was released.

I think they're like a Running Gag for him.

"Oh they'll be buffed in the remake/expansion" He says laughing as the masses slam their faces into spikes repeatedly.

I think you missunderstood. I'm not endorsing datamining, I'm fully against it. That said, the puzzle was literally going to be finished in like 2 hours had it not been datamined. Edmund shouldn't be demonizing everyone for the actions of one person, and rather be proud that we got so far before the dataminer finished it. Most of the community wanted to do it legitly, but a lot of other people seem to think everyone in the community endorses datamining.
