any reason to play on hard mode?
it seems the payoff is nonexistent and the enemies are bullet sponges

There is actually no reason to play on normal mode... You miss half the unlocks by not playing on hard.

Theres a couple of unlocks for killing moms heart on hard mode on certain characters but the main reason is you get a really good unlock on completing every check mark on hard mode, on every character

There are a couple of items only obtainable in Hard Mode.

Marrow, Smelter, Mega Mush, and Death Certificate.

There is the Co-Op babies as well iirc. @_@
The real question is: Is there any reason NOT to play hard mode.

And the answer is no. Why would anyone play regular?
There's a few unlocks that require it, as others have noted. Of course, there are also people for whom a harder game is its own reward. :steammocking:

Well you are actually right. Frankly i never played on normal mode, i see no reason to do so since if you play on normal then after that you have to redo everything on hard to get the couple unlocks exclusive to hard mode. But i did not even know you could unlock most stuff on normal, was sure it was just for "training".

You will have to play hard mode on the lost to get all his unlocks which is one of the hardest characters so its best to start early

For each character you get an unlock for killing mom's heart on hard mode, if you kill all bosses on hard mode with a character you'll also get an unlock. So if you aim to get all achievements you'll have to play hard mode
enemies of the green blue red and whatnot colors are big funny

The differences between normal and hard are mostly floor generation, heart drop rates, and frequency of champion enemies (the special, different color versions.) Enemies' HP is unchanged from normal mode, save for a handful of champions. (Red and yellow are the only common ones having increased HP. The crown and rainbow champions do as well, but they're much rarer. Bosses are different from regular champions.)

Sorry but i don't plan to play this game for the rest of my life, as Edmund would like. It's already long enough to complete all marks on hard, i don't want to do it twice.
The idea is you learn how to play and all the enemy behaviors while playing on normal, then when you are better at the game you switch to hard.

The game is going to take a long time to beat even if you only play on hard.

For new players I suppose so, but anyone with working hands and eyes could get through Hard Mode, get used to it decently quickly and it'll save so, so much time not having to do lots of completion marks twice.

If you need to "save time" playing a game you probably shouldn't be playing it. It's not a job.
