How can I play with my friends in coop?

The title might sound stupid but I'm absolutly ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ because I don't seem to find any useful tutorial to help me play with my friends.
All the tuto I've found are "Use Steam Remote and play!" and...??? It doesn't explain ♥♥♥♥? When I tried with my BF (on local) I just spawn as baby like the old coop, and I don't seem to find how I can be a another character with him...
We both have all the dlc and are up to date, please for the love of Mom HOW do we play together?

Start co-op in the very first room of a run for co-op as a normal character. Starting co-op later results in a co-op baby.

And I think you need Repentance...?

Assuming you have Repentance of course.

On Rebirth/AB/AB+, there's only baby-coop. AB+ can get the true coop mod on the workshop though.

Thanks for the answers guys, I think it was just a bug that I spawned as a baby in the first room because after restarting the game all went right! Weird but happy!
