Devil beggar chance
Does anyone know what the chance of the devil beggar is to give you an item? I feel like I have to spend about 9 (full) hearts for him to give me the item which is rarely worth it. I had a run recently where I literally gave him 17 hearts and still wouldn't give me an item (and yes, was absolutely tilted by it)

on hard mode it takes at least 6 donations but I think there's no cap. On normal it supposed to be between 1-8 donations so 4-8 hearts max depending on when you use the bum.

Also if you do get a pay out and you find another one they should pay out sooner than the first. So that ups how useful they might be. I generally only use one if I know I have plenty of surplus hearts laying around the floor already.

On the one hand, I know the irritation of spending a floor's worth of red hearts to get, like, The Fool and a pill that's not even Full Health. On the other hand, I don't think we should rationally expect a minion of Satan to play fair. Back on the first hand, though, this is a video game and a player doesn't want to be put off with "lol Satan" as a reason. Borrowing someone else's hands for rhetorical purposes, on the third hand I could point out that random process are generally random and you probably don't remember the times that you gave the bum two half-hearts and got an item for it. On the back of that hand, though, as the other poster kind of pointed out the weights for outcomes are changed so that it's not too unlikely that you should get rewarded without having to hand over your whole life bar--someone could probably get the exact numbers and run them although I imagine pseudorandomness and the seeding of runs might enter into make things feel even less like the kindergarten statistics say it should happen. Now if I can go back to the first hand, however, I think it's probably just that BoI's philosophy is to not care if the player doesn't like being told "that's just how Satan is."
