The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

Is this game anti-religion?
I'm an atheist so I guess it wouldn't bother me but I'm just curious :3

Some people argue it is, some argue it's heavily pro christianity.

Nobody really knows.

Looking at what Edmund Mcmillen mentioned, I'd say it's a likely possibility.

It isn't it may seem they are ripping on christianity but in reality all the characters tie into the story and the story and the bible are alike in many ways.

Not really.

The game isn't anti or pro anything, IMO. It's just based around Christian and body symbolism.

The same way that if I made a game about taking down a government doesn't mean I'm radical or meant the game to mean anything.

It's a game based on mental illness and severe schizophrenia that causes homicidal urges.

It certainly isn't overly respectful of christianity. "Jesus Juice" - I mean c'mon. "♥♥♥♥♥ of Babylon" probably wouldn't be well received by the christian community either, among many other examples.

They're a little busy, with all the gays getting married and it somehow trampling on their religious freedom. I'm sure if you sent an email they'd find the time to get worked up over another non-issue that doesn't even concern them.

The game is neither pro or negative.

All of the religious themes and items in the game are a result of the imagination of an abused child who was raised in a clearly religious household, and thus, is not representative of the actual religion.

Mom isn't trying to murder Isaac because she's christian, it's because she's crazy. It may be a religious delusion that's driving it, but religion itself does not cause delusions in any sound-minded person. Manifistations of insanity are always caused by an outside force triggering an internal problem.

As Ed has said, Religion is used as a "catalyst" in TBoI.

Which would be hilariously stupid because the WoB is a biblical figure.

As in there is literally a character referred to as The WoB in the bible.

It's all just incidental. As I said, it's about a person with a serious mental illness and extreme schizophrenia that hears voices that she believes to be a deity. The Son of Sam claimed to hear the neighbors dog incite him to commit murder. The only reason Christianity is involved is because it creates an interesting story with characters that can follow a topic most people are at least somewhat familiar with, and the game doesn't even make that many religious references.

Well... as a semifaithfull Christian I can safely say that I am not offended, rather I am amused by the games references.

This. When I used to be a Catholic/Christian I would not be bothered by references/criticism of religion via jokes like this. Rather, I found it funny. If someone make jokes about religious people being hypocrites or whatnot, I laughed along.

It all depends on how you operate and think.

Personally, I think that the game represents Isaacs point of view in the biblical story of the son of Abraham. The story pretty much resembles what the bible tells. "Binding Of Isaac" is even the title of this story. (Reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binding_of_Isaac). The only things that are switched is that Abraham (Isaacs father) is switched to a mother.

Honestly, seeing this huge reference and how it is portrayed, I would think that there is some form of criticism towards what the message of the story is. Especially because of the way the game takes Isaacs point of view of trying to avoid being sacrificed.

But ya know, I could be wrong.
