Tips for Greed Mode?
Alright, so I can consistently beat at least Mom's Heart (and sometimes Satan), with almost any character. But I just can't seem to get anywhere in Greed Mode, I often die in the first few levels. My damage output simply isn't enough to kill the enemies quickly enough.

Does anyone have some tips?

You know that you can stop the waves at any time by pressing the button in the middle of the room? Just asking since you say that you can't kill the enemies quickly enough.

Yes, I do. But I often don't quite have the health to spare to be doing that all the time.

Anyway I got pretty far yesterday (as Azazel with the tape worm, much longer range), until I accidentally picked up Soy Milk and my damage output was ruined.

Then I am not sure what to tell you. Considering you just got to a point where you beat Mom's heart consistently and "sometimes Satan" maybe you simply need more practice. Especially dodging is quite important in greed mode since you have a lot of enemies all at once. I'm not fully comfortable with greed mode yet either, but I'm sure it'll get better.

General advice might be to always try and take a key to the next level so you can open the treasure room before fighting the enemies but I guess that's obvious.

My tip:

Unlock more. Personally, I feel like only sometimes being able to beat Satan isn't enough to beat Greed Mode. Both itemwise (I mean, you haven't even unlocked the D6 yet, for example) and enemy wise. If you can't consistently kill at least Satan,I highly doubt you can defeat Ultra Greed.

But that's just me, personally. I seriously recommend unlocked a lot more items.
At the very least make sure your normal donation machine is at 999.

Good point, didn't think about that!

I'd say forget about Greed for now. Do the normal/hard unlocks on every character, beat Blue Baby, Lamb, Mega Satan. If you can't reach Chest/Dark Room consistently, you lack experience with dodging and item knowledge. Greed mode is all about making right item decisions and dodging.
And yes, it was a polite way of saying "git gud".

Alright, thanks for the advice. I'll unlock some more stuff.

Though right now it's going swimmingly again, now that Azazel is overpowered as ♥♥♥♥ again. Guess I'll hold off on playing Azazel after this, he makes the game boringly easy now.

I could probably reach the Chest/Dark Room with ease, but I haven't unlocked it yet. I played the ♥♥♥♥ out of the original Binding of Isaac, and pretty much breezed through the Cathedral if RNGesus was even slightly on my side. But thanks anyway, I'll play some more.

Don't feel bad. Greed mode is a total enigma to me. I've played this game for hundreds of hours and unlocked almost everything you can unlock without greed, and despite trying greed mode at least 100 times, I don't understand it. I've never gotten more than 1 floor into it because I still don't understand the strategy, or the point, or the basic idea of it. You start a timer and waves of enemies come in. 99% of the time, you be will overwhelmed quickly because you don't have the power to deal with the ever-increasing strength of the enemies because you need to upgrade with items. But you can't upgrade unless you stop fighting. If you stop fighting, you won't have what you need to upgrade. It's a catch 22 that ends in failure almost every single time. I kind of think that they were desperately trying to think of a way to make the game more interesting and they thought greed mode sounded good when they came up with it, but it's actually terrible and not even worth checking out.

It's a terrible mode that even my document won't completely improve sadly

Greed mode I beat with most characters I unlock first.
My tips?
Buy a few keys if they go on sale.
Skip devil rooms, Get angel rooms.
Ez win? Unlock the technology 2, get coal from shop, get Sacred Heart/Godhead

Pro tip: check the floor 1 shop and free treasure room before hitting the start button. If you think it's a bad start hold the r key and just restart until you have a good initial setup.

I just started Greed Mode yesterday for the first time (newer player - played pre-release of original Isaac back on Newgrounds and barely touched retail or Wrath, just started playing Repentance a couple months ago) and after getting the gist of what to expect, I've had pretty good results so far. I haven't unlocked every character yet but I'm just at the point where I can fairly reliably take down Lamb or Blue Baby.

Range really helps in Greed Mode, far more so than normal it seems. Given the size of the arena, anything that can improve your range is a godsend here while it's fairly marginal in normal runs. I was able to get to a point where I could snipe enemies off screen, which is good because enemies will surely do the same to you.

I found Judas and his Book of Belial to be quite useful as well - even though it doesn't stack in Greed, it gives you a guaranteed damage boost (in addition to his already nice starting damage) that can easily stay active for every single fight. Certain items that would typically carry you through a single room or boss fight can now take you through all of the successive waves as long as you don't stop the clock and duck out of the room.

Anyway, good luck. I'm sure you're a lot more experienced than I am, but I do see a lot of people criticizing Greed Mode (for good reasons I'm sure) or outright avoiding it, which is a shame because it can be quite fun and there's so many worthwhile unlocks to gain from there. I really appreciate that it demands different strategies and has a slightly different meta and different outright uses in some cases for some of the items you'll find.

I guess my little spiel was more just meant as encouragement to keep at it. I'll need to take my own advice of course - I'm far more terrified about the prospect of speedrunning to unlock Hush, Delirium, etc.

EDIT: Jesus, that's what I get for posting at 4:20am. I didn't realize how old this thread was. Oh well. If anyone else is struggling out there, keep the faith.

imo the higher damage characters like Cain make it easier, especially early on when you don't have a lot of experience with the crowd control in the arena yet.

Margaret e.g. is an absolute chore to play greed mode with (just like normal mode tbh).

Yeah, that was a really pointless and stupid bump by Mr. Ping Ping. Oh well.
