What is the purpose of the shop on the first floor?
So what is the purpose of the shop on the first floor?
Most of the time you don't get key to open it and even more you don't get enough gold to buy anything from it. Its pointless waste of room space.

Next are the Curse Rooms, lose one heart to get 3 spiders, how very useful, the chance of getting something beside spiders and troll bombs are so low that entering those rooms is not worth half heart.

Next are Challenge Rooms, enter and fight few waves of enemies or bosses just to get a chest, I don't even, again not worth the time and effort at all 99/100 cases.

Next are Sacrifice Rooms, again total waste of HP just to get locked chest, how very usefull.

With the recent DLC game got even more random and full of crap than before, rooms with the spike blocks and switches on the ground are 99.9% dmg, small rooms with bosses with explosive bullets are fun too, just epic.

You may get lucky and find enough coins, or get pageant boy in your treasure room.

And then 0 keys. All rooms (and chests) should be open on the first floor.
It should operate at different rules, its a start a floor where you can stock on things to use later, not the random crap floor that may or may not (most of the time) give you something to work with. This game in current state is more or less press R simulator.

I'm good enough, this game has problems with crappy rooms and crappy item pools. Its like you get tons of HP and 0 dmg or you get dmg and 0 HP items, its not even close to procedural generation its all random crap without any key in case of items, so most of the runs are lost sooner or later. Its sooner with DLC on as it has those cool spike rooms with switches on the floor, and switches are not enough lets block the way to them with dmg poop, hahaha so evil.
I could say that 80% if not more runs are full crap, the 20% or less that gives some fun are hardly worth the time and effort.

If your playing with Cain you start with a key...

Part of the game is using your items in the best way. If you use you key on a store only to not have enought pennies; thats on you.

I don't use it when I don't have gold, but that is wasted room space even if you start with a key.

Most of the other rooms you mentioned are just degrees of risk/reward. If you can't take the risk, just ignore them. I actually kind of agree that the 1st floor shop is a little pointless. Sure, there are rare exceptions where you get enough coins to actually buy an item there, but I could see it getting cut for maybe something more interesting. It would be nice if 1st floor devil rooms were possible.

What do you mean why? So you have access to the shop right away.

op, I think you're just upset because you don't get lucky often enough to make use of all the resources you complain are useless. Curse rooms have given me free brimstone and lord of the pit, and I've gotten steam sale on the first shop before. There's all sorts of weird ♥♥♥♥ that can happen, nothing is truly useless. Even the sacrifice room has a single use I can think of: Triggering reincarnations, like the ankh and lazarus' rags so you can unlock items as them rather than your starting character. You're guaranteed to get SOMETHING if you kill yourself on the spikes.

I use sacrifice rooms/curse rooms all the time as eve and lazarus in particular (sacrifice rooms always pay out when it brings you to half a red heart). I frequently get into the shop to buy a bomb/spirit heart if I can before starting basement/cellar II. Mob trap rooms early in the game can be crucial in setting yourself up for consumables the rest of the run, even if it's just one or two iron chests. (At the risk of sounding like 'Git Gud'er:) Saying the spike trap rooms are 99.9% chance to take dmg just shows how inexperienced/bad you are.

Hahaha.
Those spikes are right next to the switch in some cases and move as soon as you try to step on the switch, but of course I'm bad cause I can't predict that some crappy spikeblock will move, or maybe there is random combination that that you need to enter so blocks don't move?
Aside from those rooms there are several other rooms where you will get dmg 99.9% of the time, with spike and dmg poop blocking the switches.
In general the addtion of those rooms didn't bring anything to the game, beside more frustration that is.
And its very bright idea to get myslef to half heart, just to die few rooms later cause of some instant dmg crappy room.
Also the cool eyes that fire that thin RED laser in a RED rooms are 100% dmg taken, its very bright idea to make eneiems shoot red projectiles in red rooms, this like best thing ever.

They didn't even fix all instant dmg rooms in the base game, and now they added even more of them.
There is also 1 room with enemies at entrance so you will always take dmg when entering that room.

As far as shops on the first floor go, you said it yourself: most of the time. Not always.
The first floor often generates enough pennies to buy an item from the shop, it's just that without the ability to fly, you'll usually have a hard time collecting enough of them. Finding the secret room often also helps with money issues, and if you have a bomb or two to spare, you can bomb the donation machine to pay for an item if the shop offers something really good.

Curse Rooms are often useless, but when they do contain something good, they're more than worth it. It's risk vs reward.
Personally, I usually don't bother entering if I have Soul Hearts, but if I don't and there are spare red heart pickups lying around after beating the floor's boss, there's not much harm in giving it a try. Even if you don't get something amazing like a Devil Room item, you sometimes at least get an extra Soul Heart out of it.

Challenge Rooms is where you're definitely mistaken. They were significantly more worthwhile in the original game where they often had free item pedestals in them, but even now, it's usually worth fighting a bunch of weak enemies to get extra pickups, particularly in Hard Mode.
Personally, I don't bother if all the room offers is a single normal chest, but often there's more than one - sometimes as many as four. You're still by no means guaranteed to get anything particularly amazing if you open them, but it's very rare to not at least make a profit.
And even if all you get is coins - there are shops on the first six floors.
