It should operate at different rules, its a start a floor where you can stock on things to use later, not the random crap floor that may or may not (most of the time) give you something to work with. This game in current state is more or less press R simulator.
I could say that 80% if not more runs are full crap, the 20% or less that gives some fun are hardly worth the time and effort.
If your playing with Cain you start with a key...
Part of the game is using your items in the best way. If you use you key on a store only to not have enought pennies; thats on you.
Those spikes are right next to the switch in some cases and move as soon as you try to step on the switch, but of course I'm bad cause I can't predict that some crappy spikeblock will move, or maybe there is random combination that that you need to enter so blocks don't move?
Aside from those rooms there are several other rooms where you will get dmg 99.9% of the time, with spike and dmg poop blocking the switches.
In general the addtion of those rooms didn't bring anything to the game, beside more frustration that is.
And its very bright idea to get myslef to half heart, just to die few rooms later cause of some instant dmg crappy room.
Also the cool eyes that fire that thin RED laser in a RED rooms are 100% dmg taken, its very bright idea to make eneiems shoot red projectiles in red rooms, this like best thing ever.
They didn't even fix all instant dmg rooms in the base game, and now they added even more of them.
There is also 1 room with enemies at entrance so you will always take dmg when entering that room.
The first floor often generates enough pennies to buy an item from the shop, it's just that without the ability to fly, you'll usually have a hard time collecting enough of them. Finding the secret room often also helps with money issues, and if you have a bomb or two to spare, you can bomb the donation machine to pay for an item if the shop offers something really good.
Curse Rooms are often useless, but when they do contain something good, they're more than worth it. It's risk vs reward.
Personally, I usually don't bother entering if I have Soul Hearts, but if I don't and there are spare red heart pickups lying around after beating the floor's boss, there's not much harm in giving it a try. Even if you don't get something amazing like a Devil Room item, you sometimes at least get an extra Soul Heart out of it.
Challenge Rooms is where you're definitely mistaken. They were significantly more worthwhile in the original game where they often had free item pedestals in them, but even now, it's usually worth fighting a bunch of weak enemies to get extra pickups, particularly in Hard Mode.
Personally, I don't bother if all the room offers is a single normal chest, but often there's more than one - sometimes as many as four. You're still by no means guaranteed to get anything particularly amazing if you open them, but it's very rare to not at least make a profit.
And even if all you get is coins - there are shops on the first six floors.
