I use a PS2 controller and it works.
I've been using the controller for 490+ hours and just launching the game just this one time without the controller plugged in, permanently disable my controller support...this is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
i don't know how to fix the controller support for you but i think i know a way for you to use the controller anyway.
just use a key mapper for your controller. joy2key is free but it sucks imo, i'm using xpadder myself and that one is amazing but it costs money. you can probably download a trail or a p!rated version on p!rateb@y.
otherwise i'm using inputmapper to have my ps4 controller emulate a 360 controller and in inputmapper you can also map keys to your controller. and its free.
so you could try that one too.
then just open the application, if needed make a controller profile and then start mapping the keyboard keys to your controller buttons and voila! you have a working controller again.
and this way you can use a controller on all games, controller support or not.
xpadder has some amazing features if you want to dig deeper and make a more advanced setup but its also really easy to configure a simple setup like the rebirth control scheme.
so if you try xpadder and like it i really would recommend a buy, its really worth the money, at least imo
