who is "The Lost"?

I always assumed that The Lost was Isaac's ghost after he died.

however...

I was playing a while back and I usually skip the midlevel cutscenes. but I noticed it looked like there was a new one that I never saw before.

it shows Mom sitting on the couch watching TV and the voice of "God" talking to her, like in the intro. but then it pans up into the attic and you see the voice is not really God but The Lost talking to her.

huh?

so like, was it The Lost the whole time telling Isaac's Mom to do all this stuff to him?

I had a theory that Isaac had a twin brother while he was still in the womb, and sometimes when there are twins, one twin can "kill" or reabsorb the other one.
this is supported by the existence of the Gemini Boss and the "alternate boss" called The Blighted Ovum which is also related to the phenomenon of a twin reabsorbing it's twin.
It is also supported by one of the characters being named "Cain", who killed his brother in the bible.

So maybe the soul of The Lost wants vengeance against Isaac for killing him, and he's really the one behind all this?

but then again, why would The Lost have to endure the same torment as Isaac, as in us playing through and having to fight all the enemies as The Lost.

so the mystery here =
is The Lost Isaac's soul?
or is he the soul of the twin brother Isaac reabsorbed in the womb?


I also had a different theory that Isaac's Mom isn't really trying to kill him and that this whole thing is all in Isaac's head, and all this torment is being self inflicted on Isaac, by himself. which would explain why you see Isaac reading the bible and then he looks in the mirror and sees Azazel reflected back. Isaac thinks he is evil so he kills himself by locking himself in the chest and all this running around the basement killing mom's heart and blue babies is in his imagination.
which might explain the missing poster. perhaps the mom is looking for him, and she put up the missing posters because she can't find him, she doesn't know he's in the chest.
in the new final ending for Afterbirth, when you beat Hush, you see Mom in Isaac's room and see all the pictures he was drawing and magdalene is there and Azazel is there and it has an arrow pointing to it saying "me". and then she opens up the chest to discover his bones, as if he's been dead in there for a long time.
