still remembered the first time I played, lost 50-100 times too. was so elated to kill Mom for the first time .. only to find out the game was much more further than that. you can unlock most of the characters without completing the game yet too.
I would recommend you to somehow find a way to unlock Magdelene first, she was the first character I managed to complete the game first when I was a complete noob. The Yum heart really helps and her larger amount of health containers let you get devil deals with less risk. if you manage to find the wafer/cancer/habit, the game is aleady half won
Step 2: Find Monstro's Lung
Step 3: Find Polyphemus
Step 4: Win the game forever
imo: platinumgod for more information about all items, if you got the dlc, deactivate it, and activate after unlocking most stuff

Next up is learning what the different enemys does ... this can mainly be learned from playing, like small spiders ... on first floor when you get a room with spiders kill them all beside one, just watch and dodge it for 10 mins or so ... most enemys got set tells on when they do what ..like the spider from before it does a little wiggle that means it has locke on to you and are ready to jump ... when you see it you move.
and so, but that part of the game is learned by playing it a lot.
Good luck and have fun.

Also, don't sweat it if you keep dying. At one time I had a losing streak of 90+ and then I found Epic Fetus in my first treasure room.
The only thing we can tell you is to practice dodging and learn how the enemies move. The single-most important aspect of this game is learning how to avoid getting hit.
