The Lost having the D4...
As we all know he got buffed with the Holy Mantle and Spectral tears but the D4 seems useless now since you have to throw out your 1. hit invincibility. Why not make it so that everytime the Lost uses the D4 he keeps holy mantle but his other items get replaced?

Personally I think he should of started off with the D6.

Hmm...I have to disagree, I think its a good balance considering the holy mantle is an unlock for the lost, if you want to spam the d4 till you have a really good build then you can, but the risk is losing his protection.

(And besides I think that's too giving too much special bonus to the lost.)

Thats what irks me. He is losing that protection when the D4 is used. He is definetly more enjoyable now with these buffs.Thing is just the D4 doesnt hinder him but also doesnt help him. Its a waste

Well you could try the strategy of using the holy mantle to rack up some items, then reroll until you get gnawed leaf.

Yeah I know what you mean but then you should also get a familiar that automatically attacks others or an orbital like sacrifical dagger since gnawed leaf is good only because of those kind of items. You must be really lucky with the rerolls.

Nah, there are enough of those that if you reroll enough items (say once you are near ready to try boss rush or hush), you have a good chance of getting one. If nothing else there's now the mom item transformation.

There are a lot of passive damage dealing items, it just might take a lot of time. I once killed the final phase of Mega Satan with the peeper.

Actually I forgot about the peeper and I might have forgotten many other passive damage dealing items. Well ok I take the "Really lucky with the rerolls" back. Congrats though about the Mega Satan kill^^ Have you beaten the hush yet with that strategy?

Northernlion beat hush with the lost before unlocking holy mantle for him, by a combination of gnawed leaf and bumbo. He re-rolled into bumbo, but stopped rerolling when the boss rush gave him gnawed leaf (he then used the rune that makes a trap door to skip boss rush.) Bumbo wasn't even the only thing he had that could make it work (mom transformation, sacrificial dagger, sissy longlegs), but it made it much faster than if he didn't have it.

The d4 most likely remains because of players like me who want to play the lost as originally intended. Now call me masochistic, but I personally feel like having the holy mantle defeats the whole purpose of the lost so I reroll this item at the start of every lost run.

Well I guess that works too

That's what Edmund thought when he was posting afterbirth spoilers on Tumblr.
I mean he didn't have a lot of choice. However this is what he gave us to think about:
-The Lost starts with the D6 + speed up
-The Lost starts with the D6 + spectral tears
-The Lost starts with the D20 + speed up
-The Lost starts with the D20 + spectral tears
-The Lost starts with the D4 + speed up
-The Lost starts with the D4 + spectral tears

Annnd he chose the D4 + Spectral Tears for these reasons:

-Isaac already holds the D6, i hate redundancy in characters.
-the D4 is essentially the D6 but with a much stronger and random special effect the D4 makes for more interesting runs that push risk reward when it comes to when to take the gamble as well as the pull to"clear a few more rooms" to see what you might become.
-thematically the D4 works for the lost, because like isaac and ??? he is a foundational “isaac” who hasnt found himself.
