The game is basically unplayable as a new player without it, very sad!
I’ve played the game long ago but never bought repentance.
It is surprising and disappointing that they don’t add in item description ingame. Previously I had to look at the item appearance and try find the same looking item on the website to see what it does, and it really breaks the rhythm of the game. I generally try avoid using mods but it seems like if I do play, that they are necessary.
There is an old version of External Item Descriptions for Rebirth only, scroll down that page for the link:
Modding of Isaac [moddingofisaac.com]
In the Workshop though, you can find a mod called "External Item Descriptions" which does what you want.
Also Ed said a lot over the time, much of it never happened.
