When did Judas' shadow get changed?

When the hell did judas' shadow get changed? And why do NONE (that I know of) of the item sites say that it was changed? Neither of the wikis say anything about this...

Everything I find about judas' shadow says that it gived the player an extra life and they spawn with 2 black hearts. That's clearly not what happens... No life is given, and when you take damage, it will spawn a black shadow leach that will attack enemies for you.

Well ♥♥♥♥ me... I figured that was just a unique name for it since I was playing as judas the last two times I picked it up... It would've been nice if the icon for it wasn't basically judas' shadow flipped upside down.
