Not really a master, but i enjoy playing as Cain and Eden the most. A lot of people still love playing Azazel. He's strong and can fly, two very useful traits.
:-)
Azazel is probably the strongest in terms of damage, but lacks range, making him slightly risky. Similarly, Judas can snowball quite easily too, as he does have the book of belial. The nerf to book of belial does mean that Judas is much weaker in afterbirth, though.
Isaac has the D6, one of the best active items, after you beat Isaac with blue baby.
Personally, my favourite character is Lilith (in afterbirth), because she can kill bosses quite easily with a few battery related items.
If you still plan on playing samson, you should try to get five coins on every odd floor for the chance to spawn an arcade, because the IV bag is useful for increasing your damage while getting coins.
:-)
jk. Try Azazel, then switch to Isaac. Once you're into the game for a few hours, start playing on Hard. You'll have to complete everything on Hard anyways, plus it's a nice way to adapt to the games difficulty.
:-)
Samson, Azazel and Cain are also easy to use in their own ways. Samson you already know about, Cain doesn't do anything particularly special (though the DLC allows you to unlock the ability to start with the Paper Clip which allows him to open Gold Chests for free), but he has above-average stats across the board, and Azazel has a risky short range, but does enough damage that you can brute force your way through most of the game anyways. Lazarus isn't too hard to use either, he gets an extra life (though with only 1 heart container) and a power boost when he dies, but I personally just don't find him fun to play.
Those are the 5 I would suggest sticking to early on, I probably wouldn't suggest trying the rest of the characters too much early on, as they all tend to be very easy to die on, but some of them are also pretty rewarding. Of course, if you end up finding one of them to be really fun, go ahead and play them.
:-)
