The game is designed around experimentation- that's why certain items have actual effects with others, why your progress moves the way it does, and why the items descriptions tend to be vague or outright riddles. It's about learning and failing and learning some more until you understand how the game works well enough to get to the end.
Also, it's better to experiment things by yourself, you'll eventually learn all the tricks to the game, to the point where you realize that Brimstone + Tammy's head = total destruction in every room even if you're blindfolded.
Honestly, just experiment as you go, the game isn't designed to be beaten in a fast way, you're supposed to take your sweet time, and learn what every item does by yourself, it's wonderful, really. :) Some synergies are just hilariously good/bad/horrible/unexpected.
Part of his rant sepcifies that he doesn't want to have to do this in order to understand how things influence other things.
After getting some runs screwed up by really bad items (Soy Milk, Ludovico, Cursed Eye, etc), I took to checking what an item was in the wiki before taking it every single time.
But that's not much fun.
