It sounds more like a Super Secret Room. Like (regular) Secret Rooms, their access is hidden and must be open by bombing a wall where the door should be. Unlike Secret Rooms, they only have one wall in common with another room, and their visual themes vary wildly.
Some variants are themed on the Cathedral / Angel Rooms. One of them is supposed to have a Confessional in its center, which is an unlockable mechanic (it's a very late game unlock). If you haven't unlocked it yet, I assume there's a chance to get that room with nothing in it (as the one thing supposed to be here isn't allowed to spawn). If I haven't miscounted, there are 35 possible variants, so in some way you got very "lucky".
The list of secret rooms (all three types - regular, secret, and ultra) and their layouts can be found on the wiki. I assume you found the last one in the list of Super Secret Rooms (click on "expand" in the table if it's collapsed).

Edit:
Looking at the list of layouts again, I notice a better candidate: number 28. Far more grey than the Cathedral, themed on the Mausoleum floor, and has a similar content which could lead to the same interaction (late game unlockable mechanic not allowed to spawn).
