The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

I'm struggling
I'm really having a hard time getting anywhere in this game. I've never even passed a level. Does anyone have any tips that could help me?

Pay attention to the monsters. Learn how they move, how they react to you, and focus on dodging damage.

Edit:
Also, don't feel bad for dying a lot. This game can be harsh to new players, failures are to be expected. But if you can learn from them, then they're a good thing.

As in you've never beaten a boss? I'll be real bro it's gonna be tough for you, play on normal for now and try to memorise what different enemies do so that you can dodge effectively. Use your bombs to damage the boss if you need to, use your money to buy health in the shop. Just keep playing and learning, you will get better at dodging and hitting enemies with time. I'll emphasise again that you need to memorise attack and movement patterns of enemies.
Thanks I'm also wondering about how there can be so many achievements for this game that i still haven't gotten. I have 7 out of 637. Do they all have requirements or can you get some by just picking up items?

you will unlock them with time as you do stuff, for now just focus on clearing the floor and beating the next boss and you will progress

One in-game unlock = one achievement. And very (very) few of them are just milestones, all others actually unlock something (items, monsters, floors, characters, mechanics...). Note that this list of 637 includes expansion content.

You can check the secrets menu to see the in-game version of that list (main menu -> stats -> secrets). The game won't tell you how to unlock them of course. :dip:
ok thanks I appreciate the help

need a tutorial? well i'm your guy.
as say'd all ready every enemies and boss's (minus one) have patterns. there very basic when you can remember them all.

IF you manege too get Maggy or Magdaling as is call in the game. play her too learn the game better. she slow, she can heal, she can cheese. she perfect too learn the game.
isaac is the tutorial character for basic tboi 101 fundamentals.

for now pick every item you find, remember what it look's for later and make opinion about it.

if you somehow unlock "azazel" DO NOT PLAY HIM! he a massive noob trap.

this is advance but bear whit me. if you have a lot of bomb's. bomb the wall time too time where a door can be.
if you find a secret room remember that room you are in before the secret room.
in as short as i can and as simple as i can.
there a lot of rule's secret room have for generating.
like never connected next too the boss room. or next too room where a "door" cant make sense do too a rock in the way or thinner walls. do too tho's rule, both secret room tent too be connected too the same room over and over again. tho there can still be outlier's if there too many rule's at play. but normally. the secret room tent to be connected too 4 or 1 room and the super secret room is always 1 no mater what.

speaking of secret room go explore a bit too see if a unique room like a shop is next too one.
if it do's depending on how many key's or bomb's you have you can blow your way in.

lastly and this is important. NEVER sleep on mediocre stuff.
item like "kamikaze" are normally trash but can become busted whit creativity, skill and luck whit the right item. tho stay reasonable and don't pick up if you all ready have a build working
there not a lot of item that are truly so bad it better too have nothing.

I'll be real you can probably ignore the majority of the comment above and improve by just playing, you don't need to worry about stuff like that yet. And you're allowed to play Azazel (bruh). If you want an extra boost you can check out the wiki pages for secret rooms and tinted rocks which can both be very helpful on a run but again you can just worry about the basics at the moment.

You may already have noticed Issac's tears are super inaccurate, or at the very least it's hard to hit enemies with while moving. Run around without attacking and just watch how the enemies attack you. Then stand still and shoot tears at enemies when they aren't attacking you. This is the most effective way to kill all the enemies in this game. It works much better than just spamming tears and hoping some of them hit.

genuinely insulted but ok. i'm just trying too help giving the best tip i can and quipping in mind that the clear lack of skill this player has. he ask for knowledge and what i give is too good to ignore like you ask him too do. like wtf can i say other the obvious get gud.
let me add more tutorial since i ran out of space, brain power and time.

yes, you are indeed "allowed to play Azazel". i say don't do it. since he too strong for your own good as a new player and he's a very unique character whit skill and meta reserve only for him. (too a degree of course)

i forgot too talk about tinted rock. always check some of the rock in the room your in. one of them maybe a bit bluer whit a X on it. blow that sucker up.
they usually give "soul heart", bomb's, key's, a chest or the small rock item one's you unlock it. "soul heart" is extra health but it closer too armour for your normal health
too know how they look better got too the wiki on that one. some version of tinted rock are a lot harder too spot.

here a good saying too quip in mind. "a single bomb for a bomb is a net positive".
if a bomb block by rock's blow up the rocks for that bomb. by doing this you don't lose your bomb and even may find good's by accident like a "crawl space".
Thanks for the tips. More tips are welcome. I've posted discussions about needing help with getting better at this game more than once and have often gotten the same response. "Practice." These tips have been very helpful though. For example, this is the first i've heard about crawl spaces. What are they?

Small, rare special rooms with free stuff that can be found when blowing up rocks. They show up as a trapdoor with a ladder.
Don't try to rely on these though, they're quite rare. You should consider them more as a "happy accident" than an actual goal. :dip:

Edit:
Regarding Azazel:
It's a great character to learn monsters' hitboxes and how close you can get to them (as any character), its specific mechanic forces you to get close to monsters (it has a very limited range with big damage and native flight). The downside: its mechanic is too specific. If you get too used to it, going back to other characters can be harsh.
So overall it's great to learn some aspects of the game, but you shouldn't get too used to it. :dip:

What are some ways to raise your hearts? Last run I got up to five before dying. So close to unlocking Cain.

I assume you meant Magdalene (aka Maggy - Cain is unlocked by having a lot of money).

Most HP up items are found after killing bosses, so surviving long enough is a good start. Some items in the treasure rooms can also give you more health, but this item pool is much more varied so it may be harder to find one there.
There are also hp up pills, and the Strength tarot card gives you an extra hp up (but it's temporary - disappears when you leave the room).
And of course, don't reduce your health. Avoid HP down pills if possible, and don't pay any Devil Deal.

Steam wouldn't let me comment and Nazemec beat me to it...yeah, food based items and Health up pills are your best bet for health although there are other items that give health like some Angel room items.

Something I wish someone had told me before I started playing this game: If you start out with a goal in mind, you may find yourself often disappointed as the RNGesus in this game doesn't like players and will (seemingly know and) not give you what you need to progress (example: you need a specific item to unlock the character The Lost and after 2 weeks of the item not spawning, I got a mod that force spawned it at the start of the run because I lost patience with RNGesus).

My advice is just play for now and unlock what ever the game feeds you. Wait until you've got a majority of things unlocked before trying to unlock specific things.

You may want to get the "item descriptions" mod that tells you on screen what every item does when you walk up to it. It's like an in-game wiki.
You can also refer here: https://bindingofisaacrebirth.fandom.com/wiki/Binding_of_Isaac:_Rebirth_Wiki
for more info about items and, really, anything else.
