The reason for this is that every single final boss added after the original rebirth has damage resistance which invalidates all the power you get over the run making it feel like garbage. So going slowly will make it so you waste less money if you get tired of edmund's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
And it also adds delirium which goes right after hush, which is a branching path in ab
Basically ab+ is ab 1.5 but worse...
They have so many design problems not found in Rebirth or how Repentance fixes it all. Progression-wise these DLC standalone aren't welcoming to new players. They're unbalanced in how they add a significant amount of content upon install.
Rebirth is good if you want a consistent game that will last a long time, but Repentance is essentially a sequel to this game in of itself that can be more satisfying.
You really deserve what you get..
Many of the issues with the DLC were introduced in Afterbirth, such as lackluster boss and enemy design, item pool clutter with mediocre items, weak atmosphere in environments like Flooded Caves/Dank Depths and introducing boss armour. Afterbirth+ doubling down in these aspects.
Repentance going back to fix almost all of these issues was a sight back when it released. It also helps that there are many upgrades across the board such as visuals, variety in new rooms/items/secrets/enemies, careful balancing of item pools and reworking many of the mediocre items in Rebirth/AB/AB+ to now be decent to great.
As well as small but impactful changes for new players like removing the special item mechanic from Rebirth and increasing bomb damage to 100 and allowing them to pierce boss armour.
Rebirth is a great game standalone.
Afterbirth and Afterbirth+ is filled with tedium, lazy and bizarre design choices that never got fixed in their update cycles.
Repentance is what Wrath of The Lamb was to Flash Isaac.
