Also avoid items and situations, you can't control, like Toxic Shock or the Guppy-transformation, since they'll just add to the opportunities for bs or straight up unavoidable damage. Try to avoid knockback-reducing stuff as well or you can get into situations, where you can't avoid Mega Troll bombs. Low range is also awful.
If you're not a super puritan, i can also recommend the "Mantle Rework"-mod, since it fixes Wooden Cross' inconsistent, wonky interaction with Holy Card. For some reason, they're considered the same shield, unless you use Holy Card after picking up Wooden Cross, in which case they stack. With the mod, they behave as you'd expect and just stack either way.
1.) Go slow. (Unless you're really trying to beat boss rush or hush)
2.) Abuse your character bonuses (Hide in rocks and use flying and spectral as much as you can as often as you can)
3.) Do not take items that put you at risk of damaging yourself (Bob's brain, Epic Fetus, Ipecac, Fruitcake, Firemind, unless you get Host Hat or Pyromaniac first)
4.) Don't always just start shooting as you go into a room in case there are exploding enemies right in your face
5.) Don't take items you can't see (For some this might be stupid but for me it helped me win a lot of runs with him. If you get the curse where you can't see items just don't take them. IMO you have three kinds of items as T.Lost, ones that do nothing for you, ones that are good for you, and ones that hurt you. So if you can't see an item then you run the risk of 2/3 chance of grabbing something that screws your entire run. So just don't pick up ? items.
