DRM-free doesn't imply that at all. It really is just Nicalis not wanting to incorporate the GOG features for one reason or another and the game isn't fully functional as a result. GOG has the infrastructure for achievements and online functionality, so you people could have had the best of both worlds.
Also, not sure why Stem-DRM isn't just patched out at this rate...seems even more redundant than usual now.
Perhaps I should speak for myself then. What exactly is the incentive to go DRM free if you don't mind connecting to a client such as Galaxy/Steam or having your PC contact a server to register achievements/dailies/etc? At that point, why not just stick to Steam? How do those features function if you, say, take your Isaac on a flash drive and install it on a laptop in the middle of a war zone somewhere? Or lose internet altogether? Hypotheticals, but sometimes ♥♥♥♥ happens and I have appreciated my DRM free games when I needed them the most, knowing all I needed was my hardware and some electricity.
I have zero interest in online functionality or achievements. If I did, I'd stick with Steam (which I do for certain games). Steam is also generally better/easier for modding most of the time, especially if that game includes the Workshop.
I will agree at this point the DRM for Steam might as well be patched out. The longer I think about the way the company did their sendoff - essentially just giving up due to burn out - the more it leaves an ashen taste with me. I understand Repentance in particular was an extremely ambitious project and thank them for it, but there's still some glaring issues with the game's balance which they themselves have acknowledged a desire to work on, and now they're just mailing it in and throwing up their hands. I get it, but what the ♥♥♥♥.
The fact that GoG customers are literally unable to 100% the game is completely unacceptable in this day and age and still rocking a patch from forever ago while Steam is up to date is the most blatant "we don't give a ♥♥♥♥ about this secondary customer base" messaging I've seen in a long time from an otherwise respectable group.
EDIT: Spelling and grammar ♥♥♥♥ because I'm on day 4 of quitting smoking and about to throw this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ computer through the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wall.
3 more days to go and you've got the worst behind you. Been smoking for 14 years and managed to quit almost 4 years ago. For the first couple of weeks, i've tried to avoid the things, i usually did during smoking, like going to the balcony. Habits are harder to get rid of, than the physical addiction. Stay strong.
Good point. More options is always better.
Thanks. I'm fortunate that I can isolate the hell outta myself over the weekend. I don't even dare to drive in this state. It's been 12 years of smoking and 2 years of vaping for me, and I decided to give up the vaping earlier this week due to some external motivating factors. I keep instinctively reaching for the vape every few minutes while gaming and such and keep having to remind myself "oh yeah, it's not there anymore." The rituals and habits are definitely gonna be tough.
I recovered from alcoholism almost seven years ago. I know I'm strong enough to do this, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is it hard. I never want to force another ball and chain on myself ever again. Good on you that you managed to free yourself. It's not easy. I have genuine respect for anyone who can.
Yeah I have to say it's a sore point with me, personally. I would instantly buy Isaac over there if they could just patch it to its current, updated version on GoG. I don't even care about achievements or the one or two missing unlockables at this point, I just want the damn game to be DRM free and up to date with regards to balance changes. Simple stuff that people already paid for and shouldn't have to ask for months for.
I will admit that I'm personally disappointed about some of the teased updates to this game that shall never be now, but I can live with that. I can live with Isaac in its current state, mourn what could have been and still enjoy a timeless and fun game. What bothers me to no end, however, is the complete and total neglect of GoG's customer base altogether; if you're going to charge sixty bucks for your game, the very least you could do is keep it up to date at the bare minimum.
Isaac has been dead and then been resurrected many times. While it's prudent to assume there will be no further content/updates, I wouldn't be outrageously surprised if there was an announcement about someone working on it again in a year or so.
