The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

Better Dead Cat?
Dead Cat is probably my least favorite item in the entire game (Sets life to 1 heart container, adds 9 revives, and sets life to 1 heart container on every revive)

And I’ve been thinking, what change would make this item any better? (Besides just completely removing it from the game.)

Personally, I think it would be interesting if every death or 2 deaths resulted in a random permanent stat boost. (Plus 1 health, 0.1 speed, 3 range, 0.25 tears, 0.1 shot speed, 0.30 damage, or 0.5 Luck. (And maybe +5% planetarium) These changes would add a bit more incentive to picking it up (apart from the Guppy transformation) and balance out the health downgrade you initially get. Tell me what you think or what you think would improve Dead Cat!

Did you use the Faded Polaroid trinket thinking it was the Missing Poster like I did?

As for improvements to Dead Cat. I don't really think it needs one, but if it were to get one I'd still want it to function as 9 revives. Instead of setting your health to 1 red heart, it converts all hearts to soul hearts. You now take a full heart of damage regardless of chapter, but can revive with 2 soul hearts 9 times. This means you revive with essentially the same amount of health, but cannot lose deal chance.

No I had the Missing Poster, but I think it was unlocked prematurely with a mod or something

There's a lot of uses for dead cat and doesn't really need any changes. It absolutely can ruin a run for sure, but there are a lot of items that can just as easily.

Best use I've found is basically using it for nearly "free" devil deals. You'll lose a few of your lives but after about 5 or so of the right devil deals you'll be so OP (and probably have plenty of black/blue hearts) that the one heart thing won't matter anymore.

The game can suck because sometimes items can just screw you and ruin a run if you accidentally or just pick it up on a gamble. But vice versa it can propel your run into the stratosphere just as easily. Just how the game is.

Dead Cat's a great item already. Makes frail characters so much safer.

Nine extra lives is nuts, really and already makes the item great. Exploit devil deals the whole run and not have to worry about dying since hey, you got lots of extra lives in case you do die to an enemy.

Dead Cat is so good it's a win condition for certain characters. Sure might not be good for Magdalene but even then a run isn't over if you get Dead Cat with her. You just not have to get hit and you still have those lives to do some cheese with.

treat health like a resource. For example, try using a sacrifice room and using all of your lives on it; there's a GOOD chance you get a free angel room item (or TWO if youre lucky)

your health is like blood coins. If you can avoid taking damage, that is. Dead cat, if taking the item is properly planned for and timed, allows you to get absurdly powerful items and synergies off the bat.

Only good with Lost and Tainted Lost.

not true in the slightest. you're being uncreative with your lives if you think it's only good for those two.

Dead Cat is a free win item for most characters imo, and removes most risk from going really hard on stuff like devil deals, magic skin, boss challenge rooms, etc. There are a few situations where it can be sus to take (Keeper, Bethany, or when you have a ton of red heart containers already), but even in those circumstances it can be worth it when you are close to Guppy.
