Second, general play helps you learn enemy movement and their attacks, slowly making them easier and easier to dodge.
Third: Learn devil deal mechanics. Devil deals can, very often, turn a really bad run into a fantastic run.
Fourth: Learn that this game can very easily become unforgiving, and get used to dying a lot when you start.
Fifth: Learn how to easily find secret rooms and super secret rooms (the isaac wiki is very helpful).
Some random stuff: Beat the Waka Waka challenge, as it's unlock is fantastic (Death's Touch, Piercing tears + large tears + damage up), it's a little weird but with enough practice it's not a super hard challenge. Beat The Host, it's unlock isn't as game changing, but Tech .5 is always a really nice damage boost. The key for that challenge is tear rate, as the Mulligan can spawn flies each time a tear hits, which with high tear rate can lead to great constant damage.
The game is a ton of fun, but can be irritating to get good at early on, and can get very frustrating.
2: Don't take heavy risks early on. You may have seen Northernlion do it, but that doesn't mean you should.
3: Learn to identify tinted rocks and possible secret room entrances on each floor.
4: Certain items are only good when you become more accustomed to the game. An item like nine lives may not be the best pick-up when you are new, even if it gives a chance at guppy.
5: Learn how to dodge every mob and boss. There's very few attacks that are undodgeable (thanks for the rotating brimstone Krampus, Edmund....)
6: Don't go into curse rooms, or anything that can cause red heart damage, until after you defeat the floors boss.
7: Take your time. Boss rush isn't a priority, and neither is The Hush. Those are for when you become better at the game.
8: A good defensive item can go a long way in a run.
9: Try and get all shop upgrades as soon as possible!
10: Complete challenges that offer strong items, like Death's Touch from Waka Waka, or the runes from the first handful of challenges.
11: Keep trying....sometimes the game is just an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
12: Learn what items do before grabbing random them. Yes, it ruins the mystery....but a mystery ruined is better than a run ruined.
12a: Exceptions to this rule are items you have not grabbed before. You want to get those in your collection, because this may make 1001% a pain if you forget.
13: Steal an item from boss rush using any method of teleportation (telepills work, but they can teleport you right back into the room if you're unlucky!)
1: KEEP PLAYING. I cannot stress that enough. The more you play, the more experience you have, and the more experience you have the better you'll play. You learn enemy and boss attack patterns as well as perfecting your dodging. It's very common to see TBOI players with my amount of hours or more. It just takes practice.
2: Utilize the Rebirth wiki[bindingofisaacrebirth.gamepedia.com]. Learn about items and what they do. Learn about card, rune, and pill effects. Learn unlock requirements for certain items/characters/pickups. Etc., etc. Basically, read it as much as you please, and refer to it often if you don't know something while playing.
3. You don't have to explore every single room, unless you're desperate for a pickup, trying to find a certain special room, etc., especially if you're going for Boss Rush or The Hush.
4. Play the challenges (Or at least the ones you have unlocked so far). You can unlock some pretty good stuff from most of them (Key word here being most... damn you The Guardian). It also can give you practice with certain items (Tiny Planet, etc.)
I can't say I really agree with this one. Obviously you don't want to rush through rooms too fast and take damage, but you should at least aim for those times.
I can only really speak from personal experience, but for me the biggest jump in consistency that I experienced came from entering as few rooms as possible. Everything past the Item Room, Shop and Boss Room is more likely to hurt you than help you, moreso when you're less experienced at the game and more prone to taking damage.
Take your time at first, and when you feel confident, go for the Boss rush. Once you can reach that time, aim for The Hush
Mega Satan could be a seperate goal. but always have a set goal in mind.
That being said, sometimes you just want to have fun.
Always remember: Fun is a goal too. If you just want to goof off, that's fine.
Memorize the boss' attack patterns, familiarize yourself with the game's mechanics and remember that some things are unlocked over multiple runs.
This last tip is a bit of a spoiler to new players.
Beat Mom's Heart 11 times to unlock It Lives! Once you do, defeat Isaac and Satan 5 times. This will unlock the Poloroid and The Negitive respectively. These items are crucial to getting the game's endings and will extend your experience.
