Tainted Unlock Failed

I've just finished a Cain run, killed The Beast, and used a cracked key to unlock Tainted Cain.

Except Tainted Cain didn't unlock. And no, before anyone asks, I have never initiated console debug mode on my save file (ever) and it was after a fresh install too (removed to make room for another game, reinstalled now).

Is this a new thing after the latest patch? Or is something else at play here?

i never heard of this before when i used the cracked key on every character it worked perfectly fine

Only relevant if you haven't unlocked the Womb yet (first Mom kill). But that's not the only thing that can prevent unlocks.


List of things that prevent all kind of progress:
- Seeds (except a few special ones)
- Challenges (except for their reward obviously).
- Daily Runs.
- Reruns and Victory Laps (except for a few specific unlocks).
- Any active mod from the mod menu before Mom is killed once on that save (no matter what they do, other saves are irrelevant).
- Enabling the console before Mom is killed once on that save (even if you don't use it).
- Paranoid antivirus programs (or missing rights) preventing the game from creating/editing its save file.

Did you wait for the animation to end on unlocking tainted cain? If you touch the character in the closet and then leave really fast it will not unlock (at least it did not before).

Yeah, I have 6 other Tainted characters unlocked. Just this time, it refused to work, and since a recent update came out, I was checking if others are having same issues. And yes, I play Vanilla, before anyone asks about mods
