Question about tainted character unlock

So the thing is I normally play always hard mode but I just quickly wanted to unlock tainted azazel without problems and I changed to normal. I got the cracked key and got in to home and then i unlocked and touched the tainted azazel lying in the red key room and died to true final boss but when I got into character selection tainted azazel wasnt there? So do I need to do these tainted character unlocks in hard mode for them to work?

Yeah, up and to the left of the characters is a paper telling you the same thing Gwyn did. Basically the opposite corner of the Easter Egg paper if you bothered to unlock that.

I mean I have tainted cain already unlocked so i know how to access tainted characters menu. But there wasnt azazel

Used seeds or anything that would prevent progress?
Cause I know you don't have to kill Dogma/beast to get them as I Didn't do so on my Azazel run
