Red key?

is the red key just in the item pool, because i was trying to unlock other tainted characters and when i got to home, in moms room, it just gave me a random item?

What your suppose to use is cracked keys

The easiest way to get them is leave trinkets in boss/treasure rooms when going down floors. Then on the ascent the trinkets will turn into cracked keys (single use red keys)

Just leave a trinket in a boss or item room, during the trip back it will become a key fragment, it's a one time red key

Secret pool only, iirc.

Don't bother getting the real Red Key though, generate a one-use version instead.
Before starting the ascent, leave a trinket in either a boss room or a treasure room, then go back to this room during the ascent.

Edit: and of course I'm way too slow. Oh well.
