Could somebody explain how red bombs actually work?

I was in the new area "Mines" and fought a new boss with a body entirely covered in stone. The boss arena had two red bombs, with a mine cart that spawned in more once those were gone.

I've never had to PAUSE a boss fight to figure out what the ♥♥♥♥ was going on before.
I died (after having gone in with 6 hearts) because I couldn't figure out how these new bombs work in a timely fashion.

Could somebody explain to me how these work and what you're supposed to do with them?

My assumption is, they're a source of explosives in an arena that otherwise has none. Okay, fair enough. Is there a button to throw them? Because if not, I would very much like a mod that simply replaces them with normal bombs, or some re-spawning explosive enemy, or something, ANYTHING else.

Currently, it seems like the way to use them is to pick them up, then hold them stupidly for an unknown amount of time before (sometimes) dropping them, right before they explode and inflict damage to you because of how close you were to the explosion.

This isn't fun. I don't want to play with these red bombs. I've played a lot of Isaac, beaten bosses from the basement to the void, but this is the first time I've seen something that I just cannot deal with.

Throw them with keys/buttons you use to fire your tears.

Use your shooting keys to throw them in that direction. No need to play kamikaze by holding them to the end of times.

You walk over them, Isaac will pick them up and hold them over his head, at which point the timer will start. You then press your attack key or button in whichever direction you chose, and Isaac will throw the bomb.

Okay, that makes sense. It would be super unfair if you just had to pick a good moment to drop them. Shame I had to figure this out via a forum but whatever.
