There is progress between runs, but it takes the form of unlocked items/characters.
Honestly, the genre did not originally do things like persistent stat/ability progress. Certain games (Rogue Legacy in particular) added that element and other devs started using it. Many players really dont like that though (including myself).
Also yes I agree with you about the minimizing and alt-tabbing. That's always been annoying, whenever the descriptions mod is unavailable.
The learning curve is high, but run after run, you will unlock stuff, improve your skills and knowledge about the game, and it's where it becomes addictive.
Like the old way to unlock the lost.
