The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

Can I still have my progress on a new computer?
This is probably the stupidest question ever but my anxiety prevailed and now I'm asking it. To be fair, I really only use Steam for TBOI so I don't actually have a lot of experience with it.

So say my computer explodes or something... If I get a new one and sign in to my account on Steam, will I still be able to play with my file on TBOI? I've plugged so many hours into it. Been playing Isaac since before Wrath of the Lamb ever even came out so I'm quite attached to it AND all the progress I've made playing Afterbirth+

Yeah... Thanks.

The first image just tells you, that you are using the Steam Cloud. This game supports this feature and that means, savefiles are uploaded to the internet, when the game is being closed and synced with your computer upon launching the game. If you log-in to Steam on a different PC, your most recently uploaded save will be downloaded and used on that new PC. This is pretty much the perfect option for you.
Of course, the Steam Cloud feature requires you to be online when closing the game, in order for your most recent save to be uploaded. If you sometimes play offline and hop between different computers, the saves might not be in sync.

You can check this link, to see which of your games have saves stored on the Steam Cloud as well as looking at their date: https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorage

The second image you've posted is just showing an option to back-up the game installation itself, not the savefiles.

If Steam cloud is enabled, yes.

If you want to be sure, your saves are located here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[some number]\250900\remote
Feel free to make backups if you want.

This directory is only used as temp storage for cloud-saves, if that feature is enabled (vanilla Isaac only used Steam's userdata folder). Also, Steam itself may be installed at different directories.

TBoI's savefiles are always located here:
C:\Users\<Username>\Documents\My Games\
There should be a dedicated folder for each DLC that you've played. If you have Repentance, then the "Binding of Isaac Repentance"-folder contains your most recent saves.

Personally I only see automatic backups there, not the actual save files.

Whenever I changed those (swapping them with other files), the game didn't care. Saves did change when I replaced the ones in the file path I mentioned earlier though. Hence why I only mention the saves in \remote.

This is, because of the setting "SteamCloud=1" of the game's "options.ini" file inside the Repentance save-folder. If you've disabled cloud saving, the game doesn't change this setting back to "SteamCloud=0", causing it still to load and save from Steam's userdata folder.

If you've transferred a save and the game doesn't see it, the first thing i'd check is the "options.ini" for that line.

Good to know. Thanks for the clarification.

Okay, I'm pretty bad at this stuff so I didn't understand a lot of that.
Just HOW do I backup my save file so that I can have it if my computer craps out?

Okay, so I found this and also this.

Does that mean anything?
I swear, sometimes I use computers like a grandpa... :P

Thanks a bunch, this is exactly what I needed.
Would this also apply if I accidentally deleted my file in-game? Could I get it back?

No. If this would delete the savefile itself, then possibly, but deleting a save in-game will just write a blank savefile. Then when closing the game, that blank savefile will be uploaded to the cloud and replace the old one and you will lose your progress permanently.

That being said, the game does back-up old savedata into the regular savefolder, that i've shown in my 1st comment here. They all have their creation date at the start of their name.
If you want to restore those, you have to rename the most recent one and copy them into the folder mentioned by Nazemec (the exact location might differ, depending on where you've installed Steam).

If you want to be 1001% sure, you need to manually back up the savefile every now and then. Copy&paste the folders mentioned by Nazemec or me someplace else, like an USB drive.

If you need a step-by-step guide on how to navigate through all the folders, just give the word.

In the absolute worst case, the game has a feature, where it can sync a savefile based your unlocked Steam-achievements. This will not restore everything, though, like bestiary entries or completion marks.

That's pretty neat. Yeah I can tell my computer is dying now, slowly but nonetheless. I've been a Mac user for years just because I mainly do digital art and the graphics support that best. But you know how Apple ♥♥♥♥ is :\

Anyway, here's to hoping all goes well when she finally craps out lol. I'd get Steam on my new computer, sign in, and hope for the best. I do have a Seagate Expansion Drive but I'm pretty bad at technology so I just plug it in and let it do its thing. I might try to actually take a look and see what all files are in there. I'm going to try and wait to get Repentance until I'm on a computer that's faring a little better. I mean I'm sure it'd be fine but that's how my anxiety be.

Anyway, thanks.

i know this is very old topic, but Can I fk up my savefiles by playing on another computer? Because its not my actual save… the remotestorage only shows an isaac save for today (the new computer)….
