Daily challenges!?

So, I don't know what's going on, but every time I check the daily challenge list, it's got some timer on it which just seems to keep going up. Two days ago it said 8 hours. The day after it said 20 hours, today it says 23 hours!?

Am I missing something? I only started playing again recently, but the last time I played, daily runs didn't have some arbitrary timer on them. I live down in the Southern hemisphere so it seems highly unfair to restrict daily runs to only certain times each day. Why are they timed at all??
