His body and soul are in hell and the only way to save his soul and to tribute Edmund's favourite pet - is to gather them together.
Thats basically it
Guppy is an easter egg and thanks to the players - he is an immortal cat.

The lore behind guppy is that it's actually just Edmund McMillen's dead cat. Guppy's dead in the game because it died in real life
