Apollyon is stil lost falling into a bottomless abyss. Over time he learned to contruct a form around the hole out of clay. What you see is not apollyon, but the clay form which surrounds the abyss which inprisons him. The wings on the clay form are just symbolic and his true form can fly.
He can never escape from the abyss because only his power contains it and stops it from devowering the world. There were many evils inside of pandora's box, this is but one of them.
When you activate void it is really just sending active items to true apollyon or he's sending thier products or effects out.
