What is this brown cloud thing??

I was playing greedier mode earlier and while shooting I would occasionally spawn a small brown cloud (a bit like mom's wig looking) that would pulse. If I shot at it, it would move around. Eventually it would disappear.

Didn't seem to do anything other than this, not got any items that I've not seen 100 times before, I was playing as Lazarus.

Anyone any idea what this is??
