How are people flying helicopters?

Every now and then I see a rare player that can actually fly the helicopter. Why are the controls so hard? Is it that I literally need a joystick to be able to fly this?
Has there been any talk of a rework on controls or providing alternative controls to control helicopter?

The controls are fine, it's similar to Battlefield.
