The risk reward on this is a little wonky as far as my opinion, but I am more into the other modes at the moment maybe I'll try again later
Its actually not too hard to make money in this mode so you'll soon get over your gear fear. I'm constantly crafting purple armor and blue ammo for fairly cheap, so when I die, it just means I freed up storage space, and need to do a couple of runs to earn back the money for my gear.

I used to do some dumb stuff like that in battlefield bad company. I'd use a knife only until I killed a man, take HIS kit, and use that to kill the next guy, repeat until dead
