What is "Muzzle Velocity" ?

Its the speed in which the bullet travels from your muzzle to the target.

op probably understood what muzzle velocity is, by the name of it. But I would rather know what effect does it have in the game? Does a higher velocity mean guns behave like hitscan, like in CoD? What is a good velocity for certain gun types, for certain ranges? I would guess muzzle velocity is irrelevant for SMG's as you play them only in close to mid range?
Some insight of veteran player would be much appreciated.
