Trouble with the Mac version
I had bought Shovel Knight a month or two ago without realizing the Mac version wasn't out yet. I downloaded the Mac version a few minutes ago, but whenever I try to boot it up, it quits immediately. All I get is the message "Shovel Knight quit unexpectedly". Anyone know what's going on?

Hey Branflakes,

Sorry for yet more trouble! Do you know what operating system you're running the game on? As far as we know, it only runs in the latest os x Mavericks 10.9.

Wonderful! Let me know if that does/doesn't work and we'll see what we can do to improve matters for everyone!

Here's hoping for a speedy update too, haha

I could have sworn I upgraded Mavericks before, but I guess I never did. Somewhat embarrassing. Thanks again.
I've been getting this too. Guess i'll just update then. Thanks!

Just a heads-up for the developers that on the store page, requirements are listed as Mavericks 10.8...but Mavericks is 10.9.
Anyone get the game to work under 10.8 Mountain Lion?

Edit: Eh, I created a partition on an external drive with Mavericks on it so I could play the game. :)

I have to let this off my chest. I have been waiting for Shovel Knight to come to Mac since I first saw a Let's Play of the game on YouTube quite a while ago. So when I saw the news that it was released for Mac, I got really excited. But that excitement turned to disappointment. I don't understand why the minimum system requirements are for OS X 10.9 (the latest version) and yet the Windows version is XP. Now most Mac users today have between OS X 10.7 to 10.8. Why couldn't you make the minium 10.7.. or even 10.8? I've read a lot of reviews and heard from a lot of people that OS X 10.9 is slow, crashes a lot and is not complatable with a lot of problems you may have on your Mac right now. You are not going to get many Mac users because of this. Please try and make it compatible with OS X 10.8.
Thanks

Hi guys! I've been waiting for SK as well, and finally got it for Steam. I see I have to upgrade, but I don't plan on ungrading to Mavericks now or sooner. Is there a way you guys can have it compatible to 10.7 or 10.8? This is the very first game that only has this available for Mavericks only. As RagingCanadian suggested, it would be cool if you could try it out and have it available for earlier versions.

Kinda bumbed about this too. I backed this on Kickstarter with the hopes of playing it on my Mac. Got my WiiU version from Kickstarter (SO much Fun!) and thought I would buy another copy once the Mac version hit Steam. It showed 10.8 under system reqs so I blindly bought it. I wish that you could at least support 10.8.5 since it is quite a stable OS release. Oh well. I've got it on the WiiU and a new iPhone 6 plus on the way today so I'll have other things to do until then.
The group that made Shovel Knight is small and really friendly so I'm hoping for the best :possession: Thanks for at least bringing this awesome game to us Mac gamers :beatmeat:

Hey everyone,

Thanks for reaching out about this! We had a lot of people excited about just being able to play on Mac, so we put that as the top priority. At the moment, our only means to test the game regularly were also, unfortunately, updated fully to the most recent version. Development is far from over though!

There's a *stealth* update in the just released Mac OS X -Version 1.2 update which is configured to hopefully be less strict on the whole SDK version thing. Let me know if that has the game running right along on your system of choice!

I knew you guys at Yacht Club wouldn't let us Mac gamers down :8bitheart:

That was about the fastest turn around for a Mac game patch on Steam than I have ever seen! And I own over 700+ Mac games so far.

I can confirm that Shovel Knight now starts on OS 10.8.5 and works perfectly with a Xbox 360 wired controller using the Tattiebogle driver.

I've only played through the first boss fight on my Mac so far. Will test more after work.
But so far Trading Cards, Achievements, and Controller support work great under 10.8.5.

You guys and gals rock! :woo::wrynhappy:
Thanks for the Mac support. :qodapple:
Mac and Linux users :pinkheart: love :bigheart: indie devs :ghlol:

ps. Have a complimentary 8-Bit flex for your effort :tinyBFlex2:

Hail the Troupple King!
Wow, You guys took our feedback and really made things work in a very short amount of time!
Thank you so much for making it possible for all us Mac users enjoy this game! I REALLY love the game and a lot more fun compared to simply watching video clips from it!

From my end, the game runs smoothly and perfectly fine. I did pay my respects to the Migthty Troupple King. I'm also running my mac on OS 10.8.5. I got the trading cards, achievements, Steam overlay, and all that good stuff working perfectly fine :D:

I will "investigate" further on the game and let you know if anything comes up >;j

Again, thanks Yatch Club for making it happen for us! :8bitheart: :8bitheart:

I'm actually still having this problem even though I have 10.9.5 completely updated (Mac Mini). Game just does not load, "Shovel Knight quit unexpectedly" - anyone else? I've rebooted - any other ideas?

The error code is actually pretty descriptive. Here's the start, would the rest help?

Two things you could try that have helped fix Mac games on Steam for me in the past that you could give a shot.

1) :bittripcore: Select the Properties (right click on game name in Steams Library) and select the Update tab. Then set it to High Priority and allow background downloads. Although since this was just a 'stealth' update your version number should still probably show 1.0 or whatever the previous updated version number was.

2) :bittripcore: Delete Local Content from your Steam Library. This will delete the game along with any saves unless the game supports cloud saves. But since you can't get the game to launch I'm guessing there is no save file yet anyways. Then re-download the game and Restart Steam for good measure. 9 times out of 10 this fixes the issues for me.

Good luck :happymeat:
