What other platformers would you recommend?
Great game! Had a blast playing it. But I'm still on a mood for platformers. What would you recommend? I'm up for anything even if it's not in Steam, as long as it's 2D.

Had a really good time with a bunch of other platformers, so I'll list a few here.

Iconoclasts (puzzle; story-driven)
Hollow Knight (metroidvania; really long game with brutal endgame content)
Celeste (more of a pure platformer; no fighting)
Ori and the Blind Forest (kind of short, but really interesting movement upgrades; gorgeous)
Treasure Adventure Game (free metroidvania; the remake wasn't as good imo)

Of these, I think that Hollow Knight probably feels the most similar to Shovel Knight.

Sweet! Hey, can I add you?

Some platformers I can recommend.

Freedom Planet — A very nice Treasure-inspired take on Sonic the Hedgehog with colorful visuals and stellar soundtrack.

The Messenger — Challenging Ninja Gaiden-inspired action platformer with great 8-bit pixel art and awesome soundtrack.

Mighty No. 9 — Flawed but fun spiritual successor to Mega Man with an emphasis on scoring and high-speed action.

Bleed and Bleed 2 — Very action-heavy, bullet hell-esque run-and-gun platformers with a bullet time mechanic and various weapons to use.

Freedom Fall — A very interesting free-falling puzzle-platformer.

Khimera: Destroy All Monster GIrls — A game I consider as a freeware alternative to Shovel Knight/Shantae with an amusing story and action-focused platforming.

You Have to Win the Game — A freeware old-school styled platforming game.

Momodora series — Beautiful and challenging Cave Story-inspired Metroidvania games.

Touhou Luna Nights — A very cool and challenging Touhou Metroidvania game starring Sakuya Izayoi.

Limbo — A horror platforming game.

Broforce — An parody of action movie characters in a run-and-gun game.

DuckTales Remastered — Very good remake of the of the 1986 NES game, though the (skippable) cutscenes during first-time playthrough slows the game's pacing. You might be able to find copies of this game floating around eBay for the console versions at least.

Sure, if you want to.

From AmethystViper's list I had a good time with Limbo, so I'll second that recommendation. Haven't played the others.
Macario Feb 19, 2020 @ 7:53am
Megaman (any game in the franchise (except megman x7, x6)
The Castlevania franchise (both its arcade-style platform, and its metroidvanias)
Hollow Knigth
Blasphemous.
Rayman Legends (or origins)

They are the ones that come to mind at the moment, I know that some are old, but what is the problem? This genre has passed the time test excellently.

I think I'll try Bleed, Bleed 2, Khimera: Destroy All Monster GIrls and some Mega Man games.
Mind if add you two as well? The more, the merrier.

for 2d plateformers my picks:

Shantae serie (especially Pirate Curse)
Gunman Clive 2 (awesome gem, tons of small levels with new gimmicks and impressive art)
20XX (Megaman X roguelike game, great in co-op mode)
Mercenary Kings (Rambo meet Monster Hunter World, playable in coop)
Pharaoh Rebirth + ( if you like collecting relics and learn new skills)
Broforce (playable up to 4 at the same time):broforce:
Steamworld Dig (quite short but very enjoyable):swdmecha:
Gunmetal Arcadia (a lot like Zelda 2 on the NES but kinda short)
Dust : An Elysian Tail.

for more hardcore titles
Slain Back from Hell (metal + gore + precise combat)
Valfaris (in the vein of Slain but more customization in weapons)
La-Mulana (look cute but very punishing and mind puzzler)
Shank 1 and 2.

and for Metroidvania games
Guacamelee 1-2
Steamworld Dig 2
Blasphemous (kinda hard however)
Ori and The Blind Forest
Dad Quest
Iconoclasts (story heavy, more puzzles than combat)
The Messenger

LOL! Just watched the trailer of Dad Quest. That random waiting in the line moment caught me by surprise. Wacky game and soundtrack as well. I might try it someday.
Here are some goodies I found on Steam not mentioned yet:

Cave Story+: Excellent action adventure title with an endearing story with multiple endings. Made by a single person; Daisuke Amaya. Use the classic music option when you play.

Risk of Rain: A rogue-like shooter where you crash land an a planet and have to get off. Lots of character variety and a blast in multi-player. You start off weak but turn into a god by end game.

Axiom Verge: Like Cave Story+ this an action-adventure game made by one person; Thomas Happ. It has an eerie aesthetic as you explore a strange bio-mechanical world in search of answers of why you are here.

Mark of the Ninja: A side scrolling stealth game. Great art direction and one of the few side scrolling stealth games that work.

Katana Zero: This game is both atmospheric and deadly. Enemies take only one hit to kill, but so do you! It sometimes plays out almost like a puzzle game and watching the replay is very satisfying.

Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet: Long name but cool concept where you pilot a flying saucer thru an underworld maze fighting bosses and using physic-based puzzles to progress. It is another action adventure game, but has twin-stick controls.

Blaster Master Zero: An NES remake with liberties taken when it comes to the layout and design. This was a favorite game of mine growing up. You traverse the overworld in a tank in a side scrolling perspective but switch to an overhead shooter when as the pilot when you enter a dungeon.

VVVVVV: Sidescrolling puzzle game where you flip up and down to solve puzzles. It is open ended so you can explore and complete it as you see fit.

Metal Slug Series: Its on steam and its a down right difficult arcade shooter but absolutely fun. Better with friends.

I see you have both Cuphead and Bloodstain, good choices! I second Ducktales, as Shovel Knight is based off some of the mechanics found in this game. This should be enough to hold you over for a long time. Happy gaming!

I strongly recommend these two, they're simply very close to perfection.

Broforce, Blasphemous, Mark of the Ninja and Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet are good, too, but I would only call the first one a platformer game.

I'm just going to go ahead and list some games I've enjoyed:
- Super Meat Boy
- Rogue Legacy (roguelike, but has fun boss fights etc.)
- Chasm (mixed reviews, but I liked it a lot overall)

I might try Chasm. Reminds me of Castlevania. Do you know any other side scrollers where you can use a great axe?

Momodora: reverie under moonlight
Salt and Sanctuary
Bloodstained - Curse of the Moon
Elliot Quest

Wholeheartedly recommend without reservation:
-The Messenger is incredible. Highly, highly recommended.
-Limbo is also fantastic.
-Steamworld Dig 2 is a wonderful metroidvania. Also recommend the first game, which is very short.
no-way-out Apr 20, 2020 @ 4:34am
- Dex: 2D RPG\Platformer in cyberpunk setting. It has some major flaws with RPG system but an atmosphere and a plot are incredible.

- Blazing Chrome: a challenging 16-bit mix of Contra and Metal Slug, this game not as good as Contra: Hard Corps but still great and so much fun.
