Does this game play well with a keyboard?
I'm considering getting the game but don't have a controller - since some platformers don't have well optimised keyboard support, does this play well with the keyboard?

Think so, yes.
I've completed all 3 currently released campaigns (+ all challenges and achievements) on keyboard and had no issues with the inputs.
Let's see if other people share this notion.
Yes, you can customize the controls to any keys.

I can vouch for the credibility of the two statements above this one.

you can play with a keyboard but it's a lot better for moving especially in the challenge modes with the controller. (almost any controller should work, i have a cheap SNES Retrolink and it work just fine, the shoulder buttons make you switch relics and curios easily like in Megaman X games):specterknight:

I played the entire game with just the default keyboard controls, it's actually well done (like you, I've also seen PC versions of games with terrible default keybindings, so this was a breath of fresh air).

Does the game use analog values for movement?

I mean, you can use and rebind analog movement on a controller. But all the functions are digital. Everything can be played with the same number of buttons as a NES controller [though I recommend a third face button and two shoulder ones].

You'll be fine with just a keyboard. :ok_ay:

just a warning, if your keyboard has problems reading more then 3 key inputs at once, it might make stuff like plague knight and specters knight story hard, as you ussualy need to hold a button for themand you might just drop all input because of it, other then that its 100% fine and is only a problem for a small amount of people

Yeah, that pissed me off; there were specific combinations of keyboard presses that wouldn't work because of the wiring of my keyboard. If I'm remembering correctly, I remapped some of the controls in the game so that that wouldn't happen, but my memory is really fuzzy. Maybe I just dealt with it.

If it helps any: Today's update added support for binding actions to mouse buttons. If that's a comfortable control style for you, then that's another way to avoid multiple key collision/ghosting
The only games that are "rough" on keyboard are largely 3d brawlers/action games in the vein of dmc or darksouls.Even then its not bad its just just a bit harder becus theres no analog.

Fighters and platformers work like a dream thought.

I asked myself that question....
I've played game with controller and keyboard.

After 50 hours of gameplay I think keyboard has an advantage over controller.

World record in Shovel Knight speedrun is done on keyboard. Watch video for yourself: https://www.speedrun.com/shovelknight

Keyboard inputs are shown in upper left corner.

With keyboard you can do moves which are much harder with controler, especially if you want to do some advanced stuff.
