Buy this on Steam or Switch?
As the title suggests. I want the best experience. Is there anything in the Steam version that makes it a better purchase than the switch version?

Just buy it on whichever you want. The Switch has the advantage of being portable and having better co-op if you get the Shovel Knight Amiibo. Switch version should be able to get 1080p resolution docked, 720p undocked.

Otherwise both versions are pretty much the same. PC version will let you play up to at least 4k resolution if you're setup for it.

i have a 980Ti im sure it can go 4k 60fps. wait what is the framerate of th is game? is it unlocked? and what does higher resolution for this game do? you know.. considering its pixelated.

I'm not sure you are going to see a difference between 720p, 1080p, or 4K for this game.

Framerate is 60FPS, don't know if it's locked. I would google that one.

I have this on my PC and on my 3DS, and to be honest, I play it more on my 3DS than the PC because it's my kind of game to play portable.

In terms of "the best experience," play it on whatever you play the most, because the games are identical, otherwise.

don't you find it easier to use keyboard over the 3ds D-Pad?

*UPDATE*

ok so I just recently played the game on wii u, 3ds and Citra emulator (3ds emulator on PC). and here's what I concluded. I hate playing it on Wii u because the gamepad is trash. the 3DS has the 3D feature which, for the first time ever, actually looks nice. my main issue with the 3DS is that it can be hard to hold onto down while jumping because the Dpad is tiny. I have the New Regular size 3ds. I used to have an XL version but I sold it because the grip accessory i have for the smaller 3ds is way better. The other problem with the 3DS is the screen size. Like, i ate a carrot from the ground but I clearly couldn't tell wtf it was. The only reason I know its a carrot was because on the Citra emulator i saw clearly what it was. I think the best experience was while playing on the citra emulator. Of course im not going to keep playing on the emulator since the emulator has some problems. But controls wise, i think playing on a keyboard with easy to press distinct keys is the way to go. Probably won't play it on the switch because the Dpad is even worse than the 3ds on there.

No, you won't see much of a difference upping the resolution. It's just something to take note of for people who care about maxing out the resolutions of higher end systems.

Generally speaking D-Pads are always better for platformers and most people will always prefer them to keyboard.

Both the 3DS and the Switch have pretty good D-Pads, Nintendo's generally been the best at them, since they technically invented (or they at least patented) "The" D-Pad. I don't know if you just have huge hands or if you're talking about the non-XL models of the NEW 3DS, cause that D-Pad is one of the best out there even if it's a slight bit smaller.

If you want to see a bad D-Pad, use any generation of Xbox Controller. Playstation Controllers haven't been that great for D-Pads either.

And you mentioned the one issue that I have with the 3DS, which is the smaller screens and no way to output the video signal (without physically hacking the board with a new output). I can see everything just fine, I just get tired of staring at tiny screens, even on the XL which is admittedly much better than the original size.

Part of why I was so sold on the Nintendo Switch was because the "gimmick" of being a handheld that can dock to output HDMI to a TV was -exactly- what I wish the 3DS could do. So you get the best of both worlds, having a fun handheld AND being able to see your games on the big screen when you want to relax and not hold screens 10 inches away from your face endlessly.

Plus with Switch if the JoyCons bug you with the D-Pad, get a Pro Controller for it. They have an even better D-Pad and you can even use the Switch Pro Controller with your PC.

I have the pro controller for nintendo switch. Thing is though, i find its dpad to be too rigid. the latest Xenoblade chronicles Pro controller for switch fixes that issue. I think xbox one controller has an excellent dpad. How come people dont like keyboards for sidescrolling games? I have Corsair STRAFE RGB with Cherry MX silent switches and i think it feels incredible. My issue with the switch is that i'd mostly play that game in bed. If i got it on switch that is. And the odd button choice for Dpad on the joycons is horrible. Plus using hte switch in tabletop mode is pure stupid since it's too small anywyas. I think i'll play it on Wii U since i have it there. and then buy it on steam for the achievements. Wii U has amiibo support... but i dont have shovel knight amiibo.

one more thing i forgot to mention, in the first level, you can see clear blurring when you move on 3DS. like the blacks of the trees will smudge across the screen. that bugged me a lot.

Keyboard over a D-Pad?

You monster!

I kid, though. And no, keyboard is always more awkward for me on games like this. D-Pad or go home. Now, if I'm playing a game designed for keyboard, such as Thief 3, now we're talking.
It'll be easier to do multiplayer with a switch and there are amiibos, but pc has battletoads. Pretty much the only difference.

Guys.... I bought it on Switch. For some reason i just have a hard time justifying playing a 2D game on PC. A pc that costed about 4000$ to build. I think i'll play the bigger AAA games on PC like ACO and leave the 2D stuff to the switch since I can play them before going to sleep. I just wish the switch had an achievement system.
lPaladinl Feb 14, 2018 @ 11:03pm
I really have no idea where you people come from that you get this idea that 2d is somehow bad or otherwise wrong to run on a PC.

I mean I'd argue that 2d games are generally more enjoyable on Switch because they typically run at the same performance as on PC and the Switch has advantages of portability that you can't beat with a PC, Laptop or Tablet right now.

Who cares how much your PC costs. I still play games from the 80's and 90's regardless of what my hardware costs, and probably always will continue to do so. I even have newer 2d games that are PC exclusive still...

I guess it comes down to personal preference. Shovel Knight is the type of game you'd play in bed before going to sleep. On PC I prefer more intense games that look this good nowhere else.

My main reason for even bothering asking this is because.. I have a wii u right. and theres digital games on there that I've never played or will play. And if i want to play them, i have to hook up my wii u again and play them. Whereas; on pc, no matter what PC i get, those games on steam will always work. meaning if i want to play an old game, i need to reconnect an old system like Wii U or PS3. Chances are, when im done with the switch, i'll probably end up selling it and lose those games. Whereas on PC, if i sell it and get a new one, those games will be forever mine since steam works on any computer unlike Wii U games working only on a Wii U console.

I bought it on Switch, just because my Switch arrived at launch while my BOTW was delayed... had to buy SOMETHING.

That being said, I find the switch is a much better platform for these kinds of games and being conducive to me actually playing them due to the convenience of the switch. Every game like this that I've planned to play at a PC has never really been given a chance.

I'd buy every game in this ilk on switch if it wasn't for the sometimes massive price difference.

yeah I think it is a great match for the nintendo switch. however; i got a refund from nintendo because i want my games to live for a long time. and that's only possible on pc. i know if the future im going to sell my nintendo switch especially knowing i'll be able to play it on pc sometime in the future.

at the moment i own both bayonetta on switch and pc and i must say, playing bayonetta on the switch tablet is a joke. if you want to beat the game, sure, you can. but if you want to get pure platinum for every fight (no damage, high combos, quick kills) it's extremely difficult on the small screen. Im out of town right now and really wishing i could hook up the switch to my laptop or somethign and use it's screen. I wish laptops had HDMI in.
