I would never play a game like this with a M+KB, but there's nothing stopping you from doing so, and if you don't want to it's very easy to just plug a USB controller into your computer and play it with that.

It's the complete opposite for me, playing with a controller would be a pain in my ass.

Honestly, the controls are solid and responsive enough for it to be very much playable on keyboard, some may well prefer a controller still though. I personally use a keyboard just because I'm too lazy to plug in a controller and I'm used to both anyway so see little advantage to putting in that little extra effort to use a controller on PC.

Personally I'd say it's well balanced difficulty wise - nothing is outright unfair once you know how to deal with it, the learning curve isn't particularly steep, and iirc there isn't anything that required pixel-perfect precision either, though a few levels will keep you on your toes for a while until you get used to them and know what's coming and exactly how to deal with it.
The hardest achievements add a few extra restrictions to give a bit more challenge as well but still don't go overboard, they mainly just reduce the leeway for mistakes.

I played a lot of NES platformers back in the day mind so I'm used to fairly difficult platformers - at the very least though, it's much easier than truly difficult platformer games like super meat boy or they bleed pixels and shouldn't frustrate anyone decent at platformers much, if at all, especially if you're not bothered about getting every achievement.

Steam controller is lovely and both xbox and ps controllers should work with steam now....so its an obvious choice.

But its also completely playable on a keyboard.
