A few questions and 3 tips for updates.
My first impression of this game is very good. It might turn into something awesome! (Just played the demo and will most likely buy)

I just wanted to know a few things
Is it possible to select what bolts your crossbow fires? Unlike guns you can't load a magazine with bullets and I have normal bolts and poisoned bolts in my inventory in order to shoot a rat, but I can't make it use the correct bolts.
Is there a minimum distance for crossbows? The first rat I shot at I could shoot from 1 block away, but it wasn't right in front of me but a block to the side. I had a second rat run up to the square against mine and I could only punch which did nothing. It said it did -5 damage but his health didn't decrease. I died at the hands of a rat. That and the fact that I had to remake my character after dying as I did not realise this game is the first in 10 years to not have autosave was quite frustrating and I don't feel like doing it all over again if I'm just gonna fail again.
And am I experiencing bugs or is there some sort of logic in there?

Some tutorials would have been nice, you have to figure out everything for yourself.
A journal would be nice too as the dialogues are not super short and I have to scroll a whole lot just to find the info i'm looking for. This is the first time in many years that I have a notebook next to my pc.

Edit:
It would also be nice if it saved my chatlog when I save a game. I decided to kill the rat later and go back to the guy in the commons who advised me to see the doctor and armory first and then he would give me a mission. I did both and came back (but went rat hunting in between) and now he does nothing but give me a nod. I can't see what else I'm supposed to do so I'm just stuck here. I guess I'll go get killed by a rat again...

I'm sure this game is gonna be awesome, and It's not supposed to make it too easy, but this is gonna get really frustrating really soon if this game doesn't give me any lessons or hints.

Edit 2: I dropped the normal bolts and found out that the Putrefying bolts don't work with the Zenith crossbow.
Guess that's game over.
I did find the Notebook in the top right corner that suggests what's left to do... It says I never did the weapons training while I did. That explains why Tanner won't give me a job I guess...

Edit 3: This is turning into a long bug report it seems...
I went to the armory before and started a session, but it didn't start a session. The tiles never went blue the first time but the second time it worked and I had 10 bullets left to finish the training at 5 feet.

Edit4:
The sound used in menu's is also the sound used by Xfire when somebody talks to you in a chat window.
Quite annoying alt tabbing to see nobody was talking to you every 30 seconds.

re edit 2 ...the bolts do work with the zenith crossbow you have to double click on them and then when you are ready to use them hit q to load one. Then you can fire a the bolt.
When you do the weapons training you need to physically click end session on the console to complete the mission! That screwed me over, although only in a small way.

You can in the options turn on autosave at transitions. (not sure if this is implemented in the demo) But be assured it exists in the full game!

To shoot special bolts you need to equip them to quickslots(Q, W, etc), they are to the left of your character manequin in the inventory window.

Can you do the same for bullets to, or do you always need to hold shift and click to reload those?

You need to equip the bolts by in one of the slots left of your character in the inventory window (or you can double click to equip, but I'm not sure that works in the demo). After that they are available for use in the red action bar below (click on bolt, then click on target).

You can turn on autosaving in options. Also, you can turn off interface sounds if they inconvenience you.

For the shooting range quest: you need to talk to Gorsky about it, start the session, hit target 10 times, end session.

Hope this helped.

After reading the entire underrail forums I found that out. Double clicking doesn't work btw in the demo....

Also I found out that it's an alpha demo and they never updated it, so it's still got a buttload of bugs in there. I encountered a LOT

I couldn't pick up the carcass of the rat, it vanished, I couldn't kill the first 8 times I started the game (they would recieve no damage or not more then 2%), I couldn't activate the gun training and some more bugs which I forgot, but they were minor.

I'm glad it was such a horrible experience, when browsing the official forums I found out that there were guides for a lot of mission and based on reading just a few lines from several walkthroughs it seems to get insanely hard later on.

Anyway, the demo is freaking unbarable and after playing for two hours but not being able to finish my first little assignment I have grown to hate this game passionately. I will not be playing again and I don't think it's my kind of game anyway.

If anybody here hasn't checked out the game yet but wants to check out the demo... DON'T! I'm sure the game is a lot more stable by now and the demo gives a very poor impression of a product that I'm sure is working fine.

And yea Gorky, I did talk to him and I did start the session, but the script wasn´t working. The tiles didn´t turn blue and I could shoot but I could not end the session. Rebooting the game helped and the second time everything worked as it should.

Once again sure it´s been fixed by now but I was playing the demo... Big mistake

If you ever make an updated demo I might check it out again. Seeing as this game is growing in popularity it might not be a bad idea, the demo might scare a lot of potential buyers off...

I'm sorry that you had that hard of time with the demo.

It does have bugs, but none of those that you mentioned (damage not applying (unless you miss, of course), corpse disappearing, etc).

There's an updated version of the demo on Desura (fixes some transition bugs, minor interface tweaks), but, again, none of the bugs you mentioned were ever encountered, reported or fixes, so you might have the same experience with that one. :/

I always have terrible luck with unfinished games, game developers hate me when I´m doing bug reports because what ever pc I´m using and whatever game I´m playing, I find a lot of bugs that... don´t seem to exist :P

(using a stable computer with a pretty new installation of a legit windows 7 and I maintain my computer well, so it's not like it's my computer being super twitchy)

So I think this is yet again one of those cases and if I'm indeed the only one reporting these bugs I hope I'm not scaring anybody away from your product with this topic

Hehe. I don't hate you, man, and I'm all for fixing bugs. But it seems so incredible (not impossible) that these basic mechanics don't work for you.

If you can give me more details about the situation they occurred in (what weapon you were using when it didn't apply damage, what enemy you were attacking, which corpses disappeared when you clicked) I will try to investigate.

Haha good :)

Ehm about the gun-range I'll have to retry a couple of times to see if I can replicate the circumstances and to double check if I didn't do anything wrong.

But it was for the small mission in the beginning when you have to find one of those rats which you have to shoot with a special bolt (or dart) in order to examine. I went to the bottom floor to the caves and when I went out I entered a small house with a guy in there. Forgot his name, but he asks you to look out for his wrist watch.
Then I went to NorthEast (assuming North is on the top of my screen) and immediately after loading the next screen I turned on stealth mode and switched to the cbow and bolts I was provided. I added the special bolts/darts to the slots so I could activate them using Q and W which worked and I was in stealth mode when I shot my first dart (using the more precise method).
The rat ran up to me along with another one and I shot with the arrows. I kept shooting with the same arrows as I did not know if it mattered if I used bullets or bolts in order to complete the mission. So I kept on shooting and I got killed 3 turns later while the rat still had 96-100% left. The rat I hadn´t started shooting on yet offc still had full health. This happened a couple times in a row in pretty much the exact same way. I may have not had stealth mode on every time, but it automatically deactivates anyway.

I might have missed a couple of times... but not every time. I´m sure I saw it get hit and it sayd how much damage it took, but the health bar just didn´t decrease or maybe it got a pixel or 2 less wide. (1024x786 resolution) By the way hitting the rat with my hands didn´t seem to work either when I hadn´t figured out the bolts yet and went in with cbow, unequiped putrefied bolts and no regular bolts.

I had no weird stuff in inventory, if that might influence anything. Just what I got at the start.

Just wanted to note that I'm having similar issues with Gorsky in the demo. I talked to him, started several sessions in the range, shot at the targets until all my bullets were gone (the targets were surrounded by blue light), and still he won't give me new dialogue options. He just has "ask about the using the counsel again" prompt.
clintercell Jul 18, 2014 @ 5:26pm
To fix this issue, I also had to reset the game. I punched a target for a bit after starting a session at the range (was out of ammo) and then ended the session. Then when I spoke with Gorsky all was better.
