always max your primary damage skill
don't forget to use utilities and don't forget to restock on utilities
use line of sight to your advantage, running away to break LoS and making sure the AI can't attack you the next turn is always good
don't be afraid to cheese the ai because the ai will cheese you
bear traps
crafting is essential in this game unlike almost every other rpg so don't sleep on it
difficulty wise, if you're going in not knowing much about building a character and how combat works, normal is perfect. if you're going in with a thought-out build you can even start on hard but i wouldn't recommend it (zeem will tell you otherwise)
don't worry about finishing the game on your first run. my first playthrough was on normal and i stopped once it got too easy and started another on hard
if you wanna plan your build, here https://underrail.info/build/
when making a build, the feats you choose should dictate your attributes, not the other way around
honestly, as long as you don't take completely useless feats you'll be fine on normal
and lastly, don't build a jack of all trades master of nothing AKA focus on one way of doing damage. this might be a little misleading for new players since you can still get a good amount of utility only by making little investments on certain stuff
There a lot of different choices you can do, so it's hard to give one definitive choice.
But of one I could give, it'd be this for your main defence, either go an agility or constitution as you main defence, not both.
-
Agility: go a 0% armor penalty dodge/evasion (and if you do dodge/eva, get nimble/evasive manuevers, uncanny dodge early) feats and max nimble with specialization first.
--------
+str maybe (metal armor requires 8-9 str)
Constitution: OR go a full resistances tank and take as much armour penalty as you want (with this your going highest resistances possible, early, if you go metal armour, get some ninja tabi or a baliclava or both to get 200/400% THRESHOLD resistance to bullets which metal armour usually doesn't have, can ignore bullets with this)
For the resistance tank, the feats early would be juggernaut(only if u get strength too)
Conditioning, stoicism, ballistics and Last stand (which I'd spec into first for duration and cd)
Or first/then stoicism all combine for some mega defenses when your 35% hp and lower.
-----------------
Do NOT try to mix either one
If you become a mage, metathermics(fire/ice magic) then premeditation(req 6 int) + Thermodynamicity gives you some mega action point usage and psi-point saving, to really blast people and fight back when you gotta.
These imo are the only things that are truly core, completely necessary for these playstyles.
The rest is free choice.
