The way i gained ground on them was by standing just inside the room with only 1 space in the doorway so i could only get attacked by one enemy, usually a mutated dog. I had reasonable protection and HP and could take a beating. Meanwhile the other enemies patiently queued behind the mutt.
They ate many a Molotov Cocktail brothers, and i made sure to toss a bag of poisoned caltrops outside as well. Enemies were either fleeing in terror, getting poisoned or stunned by the caltrops, burning or if they were a big Mutant they ate an Aimed Shot from a .44 Hammerer. Every other turn i could throw a grenade outside the door (Thanks Grenadier perk, you're the best!). I deliberately kept the dog attacking me alive, just so it could act as a chokepoint.
When i finally got overwhelmed i retreated towards the rap door inside the room. The floor had more poisoned caltrops and 6-7 Bear Traps. The whole thing almost went to hell as the last Mutant burst acid in me face but fortunately poison dun him in and i survived.
I know the game is hard, but this area is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome. Excellent loot, though, tough enemies and if you live you feel like you've been in a war.
My advice: stack the ods in your favour as much as you can. There's no overkill, just burnt Mutants.
And bots? Each of the patrolling ones got a gift wrapped HE Mine and a few .44 bullets. I was a bit lucky that they were spread out so i got to fight each 1v1.
The ones parked in the room with the turrets were very easy as i laid a long line of HE Mines and lead them into their path. One also got too near an exploding barrel, the berk. The turrets were very annoying because they ripped me to shreds as soon as i came out the vent, but with EMP and HE grenades, they went down easily enough. And all that loot was mine.
Also, single mutants can be kited quite effectively.
I went with a 'paladin' heavy armor + sledgehammer + pyrokinetics build, no ranged outside psi and I have no way of even touching the mutants. I finished the burrower sidequest and everything, not a cakewalk but challengingly fun. The mutants on the other hand 1-turn kill me. Just one of them. All mechanical damage, and I have over 15 flat resist. He just hits like 3 times, 40+ damage each hit and the dogs make sure I'm rooted.
At this point I think I'll just quit. It's more of a 'just keep reloading till you land a crit and not get rooted' game at this point. Or maybe psi just sucks. I know sledgehammer is essentially useless at this point, except I'm fighting bots or something.
I believe you can skip all but one mutant, if you take the ladder up from the second area in depot B
But yeah, assaults are much easier than hammer builds, melee is only slightly better than it was in fallout :/
Edit: psi hybrid doesn't suck, but a pyro hammer probably isn't that great. I'd come back with cryostasis and electrokinesis, use the hammer for damage, the psi for control.
2. Grab some caltrops(poison ones are great) and throw them before the fight.
3. pull mutants & dogs into the caltrops.
3-B they're coming to caltrops IF there is no way to hit you, but at least it helps a lot because
you can earn some turns before they engage.
3-C Use Molotove Cocktails, even tier-1 can put them on fire, which invoke fear for 3 turns.
For Security Bots
1. Make Steel helmet with Sunglasses, immune to flashbang.
1-B. Put an armor with bulletproof vests.
Are you currently stuck at Depot A, 2 turrets AND a trap inside there?
Psi-Build : Electrokinesis + Premeditation, a lot time allocated, no damage
Shooters : Bring Armor-piercing round and a sniper rifle. try outrange the tower
Melee : Hammer & EMP Grenade
Crossbow : Fire electro-bolts
Melee with knife, same as Melee, but shock-upgrade & EMP Grenade.
EVEN IF ALL OF THINGS ARE NOT POSSIBLE, do the takeover quest first(with Protectorate one), and go with Harbormaster, try keep him away from death.
if you're not unlucky, you can pull 1 shield from protectorate corpse..wear and 0dmg w/ tower.
I've played this game for 220h+, and it'll be my 14th play..but i can win final bossfight with only 1 character. have to find more build..
Not 100% that works as there might be some necessary keycards, as I usually just power through the whole place xD But I think it does and bots/turrets should be easy for a hammer metal armour build :)
easy - normal
normal - challenging
hard - very challenging
i didnt find it impossible, in fact i never even died once.
I went into it super prepared though, after hearing about how damning and brutal it was to the unprepared.
I made sure i was wearing full on armor (didnt have acid armor, wished i did) tons of extra ammo, a good handful of grenades, two HE traps i found, and 14 bandages, and 14 syringes
I was using an 8.2 assault with a 7.62 smg backup.
i killed absolutely every enemy, i looked for them, pulled back to bottle necks to avoid super surrounding, and even saw a group of dogs before they spotted me and trapped the bastards (that felt good)
in the very end i had burned through a good 3/4s of my ammo, and all but 3 bandages and 4 syringes.
Only had one close call when i got jumped by a Mutie and his 3 doggos... that was a close affair. Lady luck pulled my ass outta the fire i think.
but the point is, if you are prepared for the worst, you can probably weather the worst.
If you're playing handholding simulators constantly it doesn't mean everyone should cater to you.
