Was anyone able to mod or somehow change the level cap?
I hate level caps in rpgs. Yes, the original Fallout had a level cap, but it was very hard to reach, I never did. Fallout 2 had a level 99 cap that was pretty much impossible to reach without cheating or using a certain item you could only get after finishing the main quest anyway. Arcanum had a lvl 50 cap, but a good soul made a little mod to increase it to 100, which was another mark that was very hard to reach.

Here's the thing, I respect Styg's choice to implement that cap and I know it works well with his Oddity system, so I don't expect him to remove or change it via patch. But it is still too easy to reach the cap by playing the game the way I normally do, which is exploring everywhere, unlocking every locked door and chest to check the contents, hunting creatures, completing quests, etc. So making sense or not, the feature decreases my enjoyment of the game because a big part of RPGs for me is the character progression, and I know from reading posts here and in the official forum that I'm not alone in that.

Sadly I lack any programming knowledge so I can't make the change myself. That's why I ask, has anyone managed to find a way around the cap? Would an .ini edit or something along those lines be enough?

Sadly, afaik modding is not possible atm. I don't think it has anything to do with respecting or disrespecting a developer. It's just personal playstyle and pleasure. Everyone has their own way to enjoy games and what makes them so amazing. It's why games like all Fallout(s) (old and new) and TES games are so popular, for the most part you can play them 'Your' way. If Styg himself played games the same way as everyone else, he probably would have never been inspired to make a game 'His' way. :HappyVampire:

this level cap bother me immensely, people that play oddity system are ok, the game works fine for them, reaching the cap near end game, but for classic its horrible..... just get rid of it, Styg.. let people have fun

I know what Styg has said about being unable to offer mod support yet, specially in the form of some sort of modding kit or tools, but I still think this kind of change should be feasible, especially if he were to let us know what would have to be edited. As I said, I lack the necessary technical knowledge to do it myself, but all my years of pc gaming and using mods lead me to believe it might be a relatively easy mod to make.

Well it's mostly there to keep things challenging in a sense rather than the leveling system. If there's no soft cap like in Dark Souls, then you need a hard level cap. Otherwise you would be too OP. And then there's a lack of Feats/item quality once you pass the level cap.

I understand why the cap exists, as I said in my first post. That's the reason I don't expect Styg to get rid of it oficially because, yes, it creates other problems that he would then have to solve. It doesn't change the fact that I don't like it as a mechanical choice. You have two different issues here, becoming overpowered (as you just said) or having an end to the progression. I'd much rather deal with becoming overpowered, as then I can play the game on my own rythm instead of being constantly worried that I'm getting too far in levels too fast, meaning that I'll soon hit the ceiling and permanently lose the capacity to grow my character somehow. It's just a matter of preference, really.

So, here's the n00b question - what is the level cap?

The answer is 42

minus 17
means 25

Challenge is relitive, no one is suggesting everyone be forced to use a level cap remover mod. ;)

Level cap should be in IMO but it either should be increased to 28th level or you should get less oddities. As for classic system, I don't get people who grind, that seems cheesy and completely unnecessary. A waste of time basically. If someone wants to be OP he can always use a cheat engine.

Personally, I simply prefer the classic system. It's not a matter of grinding at all, though I personally hate level caps. It's not a matter of being over-powered to me, I just remember playing Baldur's Gate and being unable to win the game because I didn't understand the system well enough to make effective tactical choices and the level cap didn't help. This? You screw up and you die.

IMO, level caps are for Hard Mode.

you get nothing new after level 16 actually...
