So if you accept the package quest you are just ♥♥♥♥♥♥ I guess?
Mild spoilers I guess. I accepted the package quest, and since there only seems to be one way out of the starting area, and since that area now is blocked by three bandits that obliterate me in one turn whenever combat starts (and the combat is seemingly unavoidable), I guess I'm just soft locked now? Not exactly a great first impression of the game here, what was the design decisions that led up to this...

Is there some other path I'm missing?

I mean I guess I could try to scrounge up a few grenades and then counter-ambush them and savescum until I survive, but having to do that feels very strange... still a really bad impression of the game that just screams "bad design" to me.

Nevermind, looked some things up and found out I could talk to the guard near the gate without opening the door, at least I have a path forward now
i can't believe the game killed me unfairly and now i have to use my metagame knowledge to overcome that obstacle eww gross yuck

Pretty much yes. I don't think I should be forced to jank myself out of encounters that are weirdly unfair. Turns out I had missed the exit to the caves though, so I can go there and level a bit before going back, no probs.

I don't like the idea of counter-ambushing the bandits before I talk to them, since in-character my character hasn't talked to them yet and does not know their intention when I reload the game. Breaks immersion.

Use a Frag-Grenade to even the odds.

You took a very shady proposition from someone you don't know and it ended up putting you in danger. The ♥♥♥♥ did you expect?

P.S. Git gud. Read text.

I've seen this excuse, and it doesn't make sense. How did they know I even had the package? There was nobody around when I picked it up, Why can't I attempt to argue my way out of the situation with a persuation/intimidate-build, or something like that? No amount of "reading text" would change the poor design of this encounter, there's zero hints to what is coming, and the most common way to take them out from what I can gather from forums is to die, then reload and counter-ambush with grenades now that you are armed with out-of-character knowledge. Makes no sense in-game.

They're waiting for a courier there. They'll just shake down everyone going down that path for the package, not like there's lots of foot traffic anyway.

It's a pretty easy fight if you're not underlevelled. And I can already sense you're going to say that's unfair because you can't tell what level is appropriate, but no, that's not true. When you talk to Jack he asks if you know where GMS is, and you have to say yes for him to give you the mission. Normally you don't go to GMS until later so you'd be better equipped and higher level, but you lied and said you knew where it was when you'd never been there before. So you kinda brought it on yourself.

No, I've already written that it's no problems now that I know that it isn't the only way out, which I thought before. I was responding in a pissy manner to the other guy that was being pissy about me complaining.

However, I very much disagree with the argument "lol u lied so it's your fault". There's zero connection to that and getting jumped by bandits, it's just a cope by people trying to excuse it.

You start the sidequest so it spawns NPCs related to it. I guess you can say that breaks verisimilitude because it shows the world revolves around your character, but it's not like that's rare. Lots of games do that.
I'm not saying you deserve to lose because you lied, I'm saying you started the sidequest while you were underlevelled. And that usually does lead to losing unless you play smart.

The connection is already outlined: you accept a shady guy's shady job despite not being qualified to do it, while you're doing it you get jumped by some gangsters that you would be able to deal with if you waited until you knew where GMS warehouse is. The game does not hold your hand, and you can ♥♥♥♥ yourself over if you don't pay attention. It's a taste of things to come, you will frequently be able to access encounters you're not strong enough for.

It's also pretty ironic how in this particular quest Jack actually deliberately used you as a decoy. So you running into the gangsters is not an accident in the slightest.
i get the whole "ruins my roleplay experience" thing but you're much better off just giving up on that idea when it comes to underrail or just play in game journalist difficulty if you're just here for the story and the lore

Every scrub prefers to whine about "bad design*, not that you know anything about designing a game, you just prefer to blame the game and devs instead of yourself. The encounter is also piss easy.

If you're having trouble with those guys so early on, you should probably quit now.
