Coral and her lucky charms
Started a new game and found a new NPC in the SGS Dock area: Coral, a fortune teller.
Since her palmreading and lucky charms cost money I decided to revisit her after doing the outpost retake.
But she´s gone, did I miss anything huge?

I found her on the upper floor of the Hardcore City Bar.

I had her do the palm reading, bought the charm she recommended, a PSI Beetle Claw, and from what I see it doesn't do anything.

It's a combat utility so I slotted it in but it doesn't even have an icon for the utility bar, it just looks empty, no tooltip either. No stats are affected and I've noticed nothing during combat so I dunno.

I haven't had it *that* long, maybe something will happen eventually, I got it very late at lvl 27 due to it being an old save. I seriously doubt the intention for these charms is to do literally nothing but I'd really like some answers.

I would not put it past this game that the travelling fortune teller just rips you off with hogwash... but there are Psionics in the game so everything is possible I guess.

What are you, some kind of Motioner? They're clearly just worthless garbage! :evilhero:

It'd be cool if these charms activated and steadily upgraded as you exposed them to those psi monoliths dotted around the place, as a little hidden sidequest kind of thing.

Although I'm sure they're mostly just meant as an oddity type collectable trinket that doesn't do anything than test your faith.

SInce she also gives you directions to some lost souls I am wondering if this is somehow tied to the random dungeons.

From my own experience the charms do have effects, maybe... I don't know. But, i like wearing mine anyway ; )

I'm sure someone can parse the code, but that would defeat the fun and purpose. A lot of underrail is about unexpected effects through player license. If the charms effects (if any) were out there for all to see, it would take license away from the player, because then they'd just be another stat boost/utility item that you either equip, or don't. based on your build.

Mauman's tips on dealing with Coral.

1. Start game.

2. Go down to the docks ASAP to see if she's there.

3. If she's there, restart till she's not.

Why? She's pointless and she's exclusive to Booth the mutant tattoo artist who actually has discernible value. At least that's what I've read on the various forums (reddit, codex, etc...)

Now I don't know if her not being at the dock is enough, but the two times I started a game with her not being there, she didn't show up anywhere else and Booth was doing his thing in the sewers. And the one game I did decide to give Coral a chance, Booth was nowhere to be found. It at least gives you a better chance of not finding her and finding him instead.

Seriously, Coral can go ♥♥♥♥ right off.

Somebody on RPGcodex already did this. They found zippity doo da day. Now I'm not saying there is zero effect, but without real actual data there's no way to determine this.

It would be extremely uncool if the soothsayer with the questionable charms locks you out of the tatoos.
razvedchiki Aug 15, 2021 @ 12:21pm
maybe you need low intelligence score for the charms to work?

This is BS. The Devs really FK'd us with stupid charms that don't do anything. They could at least let us know what they do.

It's one or the other,

Maybe they do nothing, or perhaps they do something. However they wanted the playerbase to find it and not be told. Let us find or figure out =D

I can tell you what they don't do, and that's allow Coral to survive an aimed shot from a Black Arrow sniper rifle, lol.

Lower my accuracy with a curse, will ya? Prevent me from getting useful tattoos and access to a vendor with decent siphoner leather, will ya? Cast psionic powers without apparently having the Psi Empathy feat, will ya?

Well, not on my watch you won't.

So, uh....does it do anything or not?

If you use two at once you get a hidden accuracy penalty. Easy to test by going to the shooting range on SGS. So they definitely do that.
Hard to be sure if they do anything beneficial though.
destroyor Feb 14, 2022 @ 6:39pm
Even if the charms do give minor benefits (jury is still out on that. At the very least their benefits are unclear and pure guess work) they are usually not worth trading a utility slot for it.
Tattoo > Carol by far.
