SMG vs AR
What do you think is stronger?
I'm playing AR burst right now, but I realized that I can only burst twice (3 times if I kill someone with burst) with the help of adrenaline, but SMG's have a perk that let them burst for 200% instead of 300% AP cost, which allows more bursts.
I also saw, that max and effective range is basicly only one tile less for SMG's. So are they "better" or do they do that much less dmg than an AR?
There hase to be an OP combination of max dex, rapid reloader and feats that lets you burst smg like 4 to five times, or lets you burst alot and then throw a grenade.


I have played like 12 to 20 hours, finished junkyard and explored the caves, but right now I'm thinking I took the wrong weapon.
Because of the strength I need for AR. With an SMG I could have pumped Dex which might help my build with lockpicking, traps, throwing and reduced costs for Grenades...
If only the game had respec...
I like the idea of throwing a nade to enemies, than burst two times and get a new burst for free 'cause I killed a dude.

SMGs are very good. The per bullet damage is lower than an AR, which is noticable vs very high physical damage threshold opponents. Armor piercing bullets obviously helps with that. But they are still a top tier weapon choice.

For the AR the ideal setup is to use a 7.62mm AR with rapid reloader in main hand, which can burst twice without needing any Action Point buffs, then in your off hand fire a high AP cost 9mm AR for higher damage with your free burst.

Many people find that taking what they learned up to Junkyard and then starting over with a 'better' build is worth doing.

It will go much faster now that you know what you are doing. Experienced players can easily get to that point in 4 to 6 hours.

Unfortunatly, I'm a player that explores until I hit a wall aka invisiblescorpions or superstrong bandits, and die. Thats why I took sooo long
I always disliked the fact, if I burst my AR, I can't do anything that turn, thats why I want to try out an smg build.
In my AR playthroiugh I was aiming for the gun you described, but I couldn't find the rapid repeater; Otherwise I would have craft it.

The first chart shows you what it costs to fire the various types of SMGs based on Dex. The other things mentioned in the other charts don't affect SMGs and are for the other weapon types in the charts.

For the build you want, you can factor in DEX AP reduction, and crafting with a Rapid Reloader and the Spec OPs feat to figure out how to get the optimal number of Bursts in a turn without wasting points into DEX.

For example, the heaviest hitting SMG is an 8.6mm Steel Cat which has a base firing cost of 16 AP. A rapid reloader reduces that to 13 AP. Which means a Burst costs 26 AP. What you would want is a Burst that costs 16 AP so that you can do 3 Bursts + 1 Free Burst.

On the chart you can expand on this page https://www.underrail.com/wiki/index.php?title=Dexterity you can see that for a weapon with a base AP cost of 13 you need 16 DEX to reduce it to 8 AP which would result in a cost of 16 AP per burst.

At the other extreme, the weakest SMG is a 5mm Jaguar which with a Rapid Reloader only costs 8 AP to fire. That means whith just 5 DEX you can already Burst 3 times! To Burst 4 times you need to get the cost per Burst down to 12 AP, which means 6 AP to fire, which requires only 10 DEX.

Can you go farther? Why yes. The hard cap on the minimum AP cost for any attack is 4 AP. And you can reach that if you have 18 DEX (10 base +6 level ups +2 Veteran Feat). Which means 8 AP for a Burst and 6 Bursts for your unbuffed 50 AP.

Which means 6 + 1 free is 7 total Bursts. You would have to spread those across a gun in each hand since you would run out of bullets with just 1 gun :)

Anyway, that should give you all the info you need to figure out your target DEX for your build. And although food is not cheap, the buffs last long enough that you could count on +1 DEX from food if you want to save a point for somewhere else.

best choose is smg as main weapons and assault rifle as secondary. You run forward, deal burst from smg, if you get free burst, use it with AR, then 2 more with smg. If it is not enough, use adrenaline and make one more smg burst. Of course, take "hit and run perk", to recover move points after each burst. As usual it is more then enough to kill 90% of enemies in any encounter on hard.
