Depot A is the first and I think potentially only real difficulty spike in the game. I'm playing through for the first time since the pre-expansion days and Depot A is just as brutal as I remember.

There are tricks of course, like you've already read about, lay mines, savescum, etc. But depot A is basically going to force you to master a few of the systems in the game to succeed. You've gotta be specialized in something, and even then, you are likely going to burn an incredible number of restoratives.

If you can find a monster hide with +acid resist and +fire resist, that will help because you can craft armor which gives you reasonably good immunity to the BS that the mutants unload on you.

I consider Depot A kinda the 'first boss' of Underrail.

You don't actually have to fight anything in depot A.
With some stealth, hacking and lockpicking it's a "walk in, walk out" kind of deal:

That being said, lvl 6 sounds low. Level 8 is much more appropriate to start depot A.
Also, depot A is the first real test of your build. If it doesn't work there, a restart with more capable build might be warranted.

I'm about to head in there myself, and I'm only level six...Where else could you go to level up with classic xp?

Caves south of SGS train platform have plenty of animals to hunt.

Well, i don't consider that Depot A is "a first boss" or "the first spike on difficulty". The first mission pits you against overwhelming numbers of rathounds (even if you toss flares it buys you just one turn), and for me the first very difficult area is he psy bettles group when you're looking for Neville - cause the terrain and cover are not friendly there and when the psy-bugs groups up you're toast.

That lead to my question : Shockwave, RedManBanjo, how did you two manage to get to Depot A point of story ? In your hours to that point, what strategies and weapons did you manage to use to survive ?

Heck, even Quicksilver's dummy quest pitting you against 3 humans with no cover may be hard for a lot of builds that early on >=== > how did you two managed ? :)

For depot A, my advice : only the second-to-last zone is hard, but it's a hub : you could get there by the west, south or even a ladder (that you can't take back once you're in combat).
=> just pop up there, shoot a pair of shots - then leave, make the grand tour to pop up at the second entrance, stealthed if you can, to let the "combat" end before taking another pot-shots. Remeber that when you exit an area, it's "frozen in time" : every monster will be in the same position (meaning they all wanted to converge to the first entrance where you poped up first)
=> if you are not strong enought to take it on, use guerilla tactics, meaning prepare yourself.
Survive, adapt, overcome.

One Frag Grenade easily kills all three (assuming you play on normal while even on hard at most 1 will survive). Worst case scenario if you have low throwing skill, reload until you get an accurate throw.

The big thing to learn about this game is that just because you pick 1 thing to be your build, you should not ignore the many secondary things available.

Depot A is a litmus test to see if your build sucks or not.

In my very first playthrought i didn't use any walkthrought or character build so my dude wasn't optimised - at all. I litterally cheesed the whole game, between nades, caltrops, stealthing and traps layouts for fights considered "unfair" and then i had a 50/50 chance, taser (took my a lot of time to understand that some items cant be found or bought ...), Psychokinesis, i had a crossbow and a sniper and the unique mini-uzi, two sets of armor, big use of TNT, and the last part was carried for me by the sacro-saint chem-gun, fire flavor. The cooked shot is just amazing, even in the finale. I remember sprinting alot, scavenging a lot, and 1/3 of my playtime was retriyng from saves.

And i restarted the game the day after, because that game is just amazing ! :D But then i knew the limits of the game and could create a character that didn't s*ck so much : more focused, wanting to try some toys i couldn't managed to get the fullest, etc.

Without knowing your build, it's tricky to offer specific advice, so let's stick to general things.

If you need classic XP, try the caves south of SGS, the lower levels of GMS compound, and the passages between SGS and GMS. Enemies can repawn at these points.

If you need money, crafting weapons helps a lot. Buy the parts from a weapon vendor, build the weapon, then sell it back for a profit. Earn even more cash if you add modifications to the weapon. Armor can be decent too, but tends to require more varied crafting skills. Electronics can be decent moneymakers but tend to require more upfront cash to buy the parts. Also, recycle cheap weapons/armor and use them to make repair kits. You can either sell them for a decent amount or use them to repair more valuable weapons/armor, which increases their sell value.

If you need money and aren't into crafting, consider pickpocketing ammo from guards to sell.
