Is there any information in the game about the surface?

I'm just trying to figure out if there is any information about what happened on the surface and why everyone moved to the underrail in the game lore itself.

I've explored quite a bit, and I have seen pre-Biocorp info very sparringly, and no references to what happened to the surface or the current state of it anywhere.

I don't think there's any info about the surface in the game. Not even legends or stories which is weird. I guess people have lived underground for so long that the very concept of "surface" simply doesn't register anymore, it might as well be on another planet. Scholarly groups like Tchortists being the exception of course.
