Guys I'm sad, my sledgehammer / spear + heavy armor build is useless against most enemies
The only salvation I've invested in grenades, caltrops and medicine. because without them there is no way to kill lunatics, stalkers, bandits with heavy armor.

I only have some advantage against enemies that come to melee

And even if they come close, those who use knives and machetes destroy me.

If they are far away, submachine guns, rifles and grenades do a lot of damage.

So I'm practically not attacking at close range, I'm throwing gas grenades, molotov, fragmentation and hiding. If anyone, get close to more I attack. And that's it. All my battles are this way.

The thing I've learned about this game is that you need to have at least one ranged-attack skill (especially if you're playing the DLC as some foes are in the water, where you can never close in at melee range on some of the maps). If you're doing melee-only, I am inclined to think you need a heavy investment in stealth in order to close in on your foes (hit them hard and re-stealth).

Another thing to consider is that this game is heavily tactics-oriented. My build is somewhat of a jack-of-all trades build that focused heavily on guns, melee, metathermics and psychokinesis (lesser investment in Mind Control with just enough to learn their useful powers - my weakest is naturally temporal since the DLC came out after I hit level cap in the original game). As a sacrifice, he cannot really craft (except for mechanical items, as I meta-gamed toward crafting super steel with regenerative vest)

As well-rounded and powerful as he is in combat, there have been many encounters that forced me to think creatively, and use my inventory utilities in creative / semi-creative ways. The final boss battle tested my build (which I am still playing with in the expansion) to its utter limit (though I honestly don't think he would pan out on hard or dominating - but I will test it anyways).

No one build in this game is ever going to be perfect for all situations in the game (though stealth has a good advantage provided you have enough equipment to make it work - the catch, however, is that stealth does not work on jet ski's, so those builds will suffer heavily in the DLC should the run afoul of naval combat).

Aside from your build, what sort of gear are you using?

One thing I noticed from your build is that your main combat skill wasn't maxed. Always, always, always have your main combat skill maxed. And with that much constitution, it's odd that you're running out of health so quickly. Maybe your armor needs an upgrade. Make sure your thresholds, resistances, and other armor bonuses suit the enemies you're fighting.

Additionally, no matter how tanky you might be, tactics play a big role in combat. Split the enemy up, abuse line of sight against ranged enemies, stun a few and deal with them later, etc. The points you spent in dodge and evade may not be doing much for you as you're a heavy armor build.

And are you using an energy shield? A good shield can make all the difference in the world. ESPECIALLY for a build designed to be in the thick of things. They're borderline mandatory.

Expedition favours ranged and psi. Just saying.

This build is by no means perfect but hopefully it should give a rough representation about how sledgehammer character should look. You can also take Vile Weaponry and Taste for Blood if you want, i dont value those that much because sledgehammer does not have that many attacks per turn compared to knifers or fisters. If you do take those feats- be sure that armor you are using have serrated blades on it.

Oh, and you starting stats should be 8 str, 8 con, 6 agi-dex-int.

If you're playing normal you should be fine over time, my first build was complete trash but I still finished the game. Probably would be a good idea to switch to a different weapon than sledge/spear since neither can proc vile and taste for blood, maybe a fist might do better for you.

But yeah you should be using line of sight as much as possible, when you see enemy, enter combat, throw a molotov to CC some of them and do some damage and hide behind a corner, killing anyone that approach you.

Hi!

Spear can apply blood taste and vile weapon, I tested and makes a good combo.

Exactly, that has been the strategy, but I thought it was possible to face enemies face to face.

Maybe it's because I'm playing hard.

Putting points in dodge/evasion on a build with significant armour penalty is just a waste.

I took Sure Step at lv 2 on my smg char because I also played with caltops, a lot during the first 15 lvs and a bit less later on, but with crawler poisoned ones. They are great for slowing them down, grouping them together and manipulating their AI, and they never go away. Not stepping on them has been proven very useful.

Metal Boots. Super steel boots only have 10% penalty and ti-chrome has 11%. Early game you can use steel boots with 14%, its not that bad.
